to Quincy Wisdom ....Longhaired Weimaraners

Hi there, I note from the breed standard you have for Weimars that you class the Long Hair as a fault? This is very interesting, as they are recognised in the UK and we even have a couple of Show Champions, plus a full Champion.
(The system here is that at a Championship show, the dog must gain 3 Challenge Certificates i.e. beating all the other males being shown - a full Champion is a dog that has also qualified in the field, as well as the Show Ring)
be interested to hear your comments Quincy Wisdom!
Regards Jules and Jazz

Jules, will all due respect, I have no idea what you are talking about...are you talking about the simple list of breeds we have for the sporting group?

If so, Longhaired Weimars arn't even listed on our list.

I'm more than a little confused on what you mean...

To Quincy Wisdom - Longhaired Weimaraners

Hi there Quincy! right, let me explain myself .....
In the UK we have Weimaraners WITH LONG HAIR....they have a coat something about the same length as a Golden Retriever.
They are a recognised within the breed here and are being shown and worked.
As I said, we have a couple of Show Champions and also a Full Champion (i.e. to become a Show Champion the dog must win 3 Challenge Certificates at Championship Shows, that is beat all the other males being shown) and to become a full Champion the dog must also win a Working/Gundog Test in the field. Of course, it is the Gundog Group here, not the Sporting Group.
I note that on the Breed Standard you have on the site, long hair is classed as a fault? therefore, you do not have any long haired Weimars in the Country? There are also Wire-haired Weimaraners, but thats a different story ..... Jules

Jules...we don't have breed standards listed on the site. We link to the AKC website just for users to get more information...we certaintly do not entertain a lot of their rankings because of the differences between our users.

Maybe I can help as a Weimaraner owner.

The Weimaraner breed standard, last updated in 1972, lists both a distinctly long coat and a blue coat as a disqualitfication.
The long coat, a receissive genetic trait, can not be shown in the US, and most breeders sell their long haired puppies to the UK or Australia.
The blue coat, a dominant genetic trait, can also not be shown in the US. No other country really accepts them either, so they are not bred by responsible breeders, for the most part, in the US.
Many irresponsible breeders breed both blues and longhairs and tout them as rare, selling them for extravagant prices with no regard for standard or quality!
Hope that answered your question. From 1944 to 1971 longhairs were shown in the US.

Oh, yes, if I didn't mention, I was stating the AKC standard, the UK and other countries all have their own developed standards.

Hi Jules,

I think where the confusion comes from is your looking at / going with the UK Standard where the breed list of each group listed within our forum is from the states, a difference of AKC and UK standards.

The AKC does list the long hair as a fault where UK does not. The AKC listings and standards are those used here at Global Paw, that does not mean that the owner or staff members of the forum are for or against the written UK standards set for their breeds but simply that the AKC lists and written standards are what was choosen for listing and describing certain breeds.

I do understand your point but to prevent confusion for those that may not be familiar with both sets of standards I believe Quincy chose to use one that he was more familiar with. Does that make more sense?

Yup, that's why I answered. People have looked at the thread lots, so someone is interested.
And thank you Crossfire for clearing up my somewhat jumbled post. You answered more concisely than I!
