First let me start by saying that this is NOT just for Lab owners. Anyone who is just fond of them or interested in finding out more on Labs are welcome. I just thought a thread for Labs would be cool.
Well a bit earlier some of us got cought up talking about labs in another thread. Anyhoo I thought I'd start a thread for us to share our information on Labradors, pedigrees, colors and genetics and questions . I guess I'll start by saying I LOVE reseaching Labrador pedigrees and finding all I can about past Labradors and breeders who made a great impact on this wonderful breed. Some breeders are still around but futurer generations took over and are still keeping up the excellent work their parents did befor them. My love for the breed started with my parents lab, Dixie, almost 5 years ago. Ever since then I've been doing all I can to find out more about them. I've been researching pedigrees and breeders for nearly that long too, and have found out a lot but still not enough for my hungry mind.. As you all know I aquired my very first labrador, Black Knight Midnite Eclipse "Beau" whom turned 6months Aug. 28th... Many think its stupid to start with a stud, but I don't intend to breed a litter for many more years and besides you don't have a limited time frame to finnish a dog as you do with a bitch. Anyway, I'd love to share my knowledge and opinions with any one who is interested. I also have a few pictures of "great" labs of the past and information on some.. I also have a few pedigrees and pedigree database links as well. I'd also like to hear about any one elses expr. , opinions and knowledge on Labs or any thing else. |

Well I have a question.... how can you search pedigrees? Is there a place on the AKC website to find them or what? I have a weimaraner and would like to look at pedigrees also.

Paws, not hijacking, promise... LOL!
Lauren, This is the best place to research pedigrees for Weims. Sylvia Voorn in Holland maintains this database, and it has just about every Weim on it. Both Topper and Spirit are included. http://www.weimaranerpedigrees.com/ PnC Post those lab pictures. I would love to learn more about them. MY friend that has the chocolate has a nice yellow that she wants me to train for his JH. He's a Japanese import and I think he will do very well with retrieving, just because he needs an outlet for his energy. I know labs are vastly different then Weims and I'd love to learn about them, just so I can understand Luca. |

A very nice blue Matthew, but, it would be difficult for a show breeder to incorporate him into their lines.
I wish more labs were both field and show, but so very few breeders have this as a goal in their breeding program, or so it seems to me. Am I wrong? |

Novel, here a few of the pictures I have(below). I haven't even scanned in half of them yet and I intend on doing so tomorrow, if I can get to it. See I found out that we may be having a pro. field trainer coming over tomorrow to share some pointers.. I'm very excited ! Sad tho, he has a contract of some sort with the Flying B Ranch to train their GSPs and Labs, so untill then he won't be doing any outside training. I like him because he works WITHOUT thoughs shock training collars and he has success. Anyway, back to this topic, just got excited lol. Novel, I'll help in anyway I can
, just let me know what your looking for and I'll see if I can help.MG, I know about Cuda, he's a great field dog and he shares linage with Ricky(Daisys sire) so I'm familar with his pedigree. I also know about Rip, another great field dog. Now, not to start anything, but my all time fav. Chlt is Lawnwoods Hot Chlt "Chock" as he was know. This fella got a show Ch. PLUS he was a well used field dogs. Very nice looking and still able. I want more like him in the ring !.. I agree Novel. I see so many divided and now-days, so many field dogs are just farther away from the breed standard that is crazy(some show bred too). I meen sure, this is been going on since the early to mid 1900s' but it seems to have worsend over the years. I've seen field dogs that look great but others, well they don't look so great but they have that drive. Some show bred do nothing but conformation and look like they die if they ran 10feet, others look like they could hunt all day. I think some times it's the owners choice if the dogs gets a field title but I would think they would prove their Labs can do both by showing they can get both titles in both areas. Who knows. Anyway, them pictures. Here is Chock, ![]() I'll upload his retieving pictures tomorrow. ![]() This was the first Dual Champion. Dual. Champion Bramshaw Bob ![]() Another past "great". Champion Whygin Royal Rocket ![]() Healtherbourn Statesman, litter brother to Heatherbourn For Get Me Not. Sadly he died at an early age. Ok, I need to go but I'll add more pictures and info tomorrow. Enjoy ! |

I had a black lab named Dixon, a couple of years ago. He was a rescue of a rescue of a rescue. So, I guess one of my aunt's friends had rescued him and for some reason they had to give him up but instead of taking him back to the rescuer they handed him over to my aunt and uncle. Then my uncle Tim developed a sudden mysterious allergy to dogs, so we got him. He was originally a stud for a breeder who was trying to create oversized labs, well the breeder succeeded in that. Dixon was huge, only about an inch shorter than our Akbash was. He was kept in a crate for most of his life while with the breeder and was only let out to breed. My aunt and uncle sent him to "boot camp" but the trainer said that there wasn't much she could do and said he was a "lost cause". When we got him he was unruly but still a great dog. Unforntunatley, a speeding driver came down the street the same time he was let out of the gate by mistake. He'd been hit by cars a few times before and walked out with hardly a scatch (my mom backed over him with her truck and only had a tiny scab on his head) but this time it did him in and he had to be put down. It was pretty funny to see my dalmatian (who is pretty small for a dal) totally dominate him. (:

Yay! Its a Lab Thread!!
![]() I love Labs! I have two, Wesley and Lilly. Wesley's mother was a purebred lab, but we have no idea who his father was, but the people also had a male lab, so it is possible that he is a purebred as well. Lilly's mother was 1/2 Black Lab and 1/2 Border Collie, and her father was a purebred yellow lab. Wesley is 19 months old and Lilly is 13 weeks old. Labs are such an awesome breed! |

Well I'm in the middle of uploading more pictures for you all. It may take some time but I'll try and get more this time. I agree Annie, Labs are excellent and learning about their past is very neat. I have a picture of one of the early labs and a link to a site that has more and a better understanding to the Labrador history and development. I would love to know where they got their pictures b/c they are very old.
Novel, this site I would rank valuable to any person interested in the Labrador. It's an interesting site and may help you. Labrador History and Time Line Let me know if that link is ok to post, if not I'll put in the web site area. |

I've always loved labs, just recently researching the whole show/breeding/standard thing. I've known a bit about it, but I'm getting so sick of seeing ugly labs that I just had to start searching for REAL labs. PawsNClaws - I love Chock!! He is a gorgeous dog.... Bob, I don't really like his head. Other than that, he looks like he was a very nice looking dog. Rocket, too...his head...also it looks like he could've been a little bit more fit....just a little bit more of a tuckup. Statesmen is just too chunkiness for me though. I like his head though! ![]() |

Is it possible to bring the two lines back together?
I'm assuming it would it would take some good breeding and a lot of showing and trialling. I've heard in Germany a GSD has to have a Schutzhund or an other working title before the dog can be registered (not sure if this true maybe the GSD owners could confirm that). Would it be reasonable to make a rule that a sporting or working dogs must have a working tile before they can be shown? Is there any chance of other breeds splitting into a working/field line and a show line? Like the Weim's, golden's, etc. |
