I don't think it's a great idea to enter her in a hunt test if she's never hunted before. That's something you'd have to train for. Going in with no training, would just be a waste of time.
Maybe find out how to go about it all, and enter later on down the road when she's ready. ![]() |

I agree. I would do a little research on Hunt Test first and then do a little basic field training.
Quote from akc site "The purpose of Hunting Tests for dogs of the Pointing Breeds is to afford an opportunity for a person to demonstrate a dog's ability to perform in a manner consistent with the demands of actual hunting conditions. Testing gauges the dog's natural hunting ability and training. " I think for a JH in hunt test , it would requir a few basics like good recall, steady to point, etc. I PM'd you a link that may help. |

Actually we encourage people to enter their first hunt test before they've ever done any hunting. We call it a walk with your dog. It will give you an idea of your dog's current ability and what you need to work on. Many people over train, or train their dogs incorrectly, expecially novices, when it comes to hunting...
Remember, the hunt test is supposed to measure a large amount of the dog's natural ability, when testing at the Junior Hunter (JH)level. Weimgirl, the tests are a bit pricey, so maybe just enter one day with Belle. You don't want her to flush the birds... That's a springer's job. She is just supposed to find them and point them. Not kick them up or chase them. She is supposed to freeze when she smells them. Holding her point is something that you can teach her after you know where she currently is. Some dogs hold their point very naturally. At the Junior Hunter level the dog needs to indicate, even if it is just a hesitation or flash point. Some items/equipment you will need for a hunt test. Starter/Blank .22 pistol (Outdoors store from $20 - $200) Blaze Orange vest & hat Orange/Yellow reversible collar for Belle. She will also need a flat buckle collar to wear during the test. (no chains) You will need lots of water And a game vest if you have one can carry your pistol, lead, water etc... while you walk. Hope that helps...... |

I know nothing about hunt tests but if it's ok to enter without training I say go for it.
I think it's wonderful you're getting so involved with Belle. Have fun! And don't forget to tell us all about it afterwards. Cass. |
