Cherry Eye questions
My Lucy is definately the reason they say cocker's have eye issues. The poor thing has gotten cherry eye and just looks at me like, "Please, fix this." So, I've been reading a bit about Cherry Eye (which is where the third eyelid just pops out - very common in cockers) and how to fix it. I saw there are three typical procedures for the problem; tuck it in, snip it off, or remove the tear duct. I was curious if anyone else here has had this problem and has talked to their vet -- I'm in a new town and haven't found one I trust yet. I'm curious about the best procedure, which is as I understand to just snip off the exposed lid, and about what the cost of the surgery is going to be. I've seen anywhere from $200-$800 per eye. Does anyone know some questions I should be asking the vet before I let them put my dog under the knife?

Luckily, my boy has never been bothered by cherry eye but one of our members , Sweetpea, has a little girl who had that problem. Hopefully, she will see your question and give you the appropriate info.

Hi StephofOZ, Sorry to hear that your little one has cherry eye.
Emma had surgery twice on the same eye. It came back a few days after she had it done the first time. The vet then had to attach her 3rd eyelid to her skull. I felt so bad for her. But I know it had to be done. She hasn't had to have surgery on her second eye yet. It comes out once in a while if she is really excited, but we can massage it back. The vet said she may need it done some day but not right now. The first time it cost around $500 Canadian she was also spayed at the same time. Then another $100 the second time. I hope you don't have any problems just make sure to talk to your vet about options if this happens to you. My Vet had told me this might happen before the first surgery. He also likes to leave in the gland. The old way is to remove the gland. If you remove the gland you may need to use drops for the rest of the dogs life, for Dry eyes. Emma has had a few eye infections since but seems to be fine now. Make sure to take care of your furkids eye as soon as possible. I was told the longer you wait there may be more complications. Good luck, let us know how you makes out.![]() |

Thanks for the advice!! I never heard of massaging it before! LoL I wonder how long Lucy will sit still for that! I just hate her face right now, she looks so pitiful with her cherry eye. I hate it for her -- I can't hate her face, really! I'm going to keep shopping for a vet and hopefully find one who won't risk her having to come back again for the same surgery!! Yikes!!
