Any Cocker Spaniel owners?
Hi,
I will be picking up my new cocker spaniel pup hopefully tomorrow if it does not snow and ice like its suspose to and I would love to hear any training tips or advise from other owners of this breed. I am also wondering if they are harder to housetrain than other breeds like I have read and heard. I plan on useing the create training method that I have used with other puppys that I have owned. I had an adult Cocker Spaniel that was already trained a long time ago that we got from a shelter but this is the first puppy I have had. Thanks, Amanda |

hm... mine is at about 10mo old... she's trained in the sense that she won't go in her crate, or in a fenced in area around her crate... but if we don't keep a close eye on her through the whole house she'll still go in side... although we can sometimes catch her if she appears to be "looking for a spot" we can take her out right away.
I'm hoping that eventualyl she gets the idea that she can just go to the door, bark, and be let out! any feedback on if this will kick in maybe? maybe in 3 months more? 6 perhaps?? |

Hi! I have two Cockerspaniels. Rio I had since birth literally. I feel like I gave brith to him. My brothers dog wasn't fixed in time hence I ended up with RIo. Then of course they didnt fix the dog again or should I say Yet and Nicholas was born. I used to live in Las Vegas so I brought RIo to NY when he was 6 months old. When I went back to visit this year Nicholas was 3 by that time I saw him and he was such a sad pup. He was one of five and definetly not the alpha. Rio trained quickly never chewed up my house, I had to train him on wee wee pads first cause in y apartment complex in vegas they have designated doggy walk areas and he got violently saick so vet said till he got older keep him on the pads. What we did to train him to go outside is put bells hanging low on the door knobs and we say you want to go out and hit the bells. He learned fast. I think he can play jingle bells. I still keep wee pads down I call it for emergency purposes in case I am out or something. This dog has impecable aim (Wish my husband had that good of aim at the toilet). I just find my two Cockers to want constant attention. I believe they were breed to soon. But thats my opinion. But they are two very happy spoiled dogs. Good luck with your new baby. Cant waite to see pictures.

I have a 6 1/2 year old male american cocker. Other than health issues, I find he is the greatest dog . He is friendly with all humans and enjoys the company of other dogs or cats no problem. He even got along with my budgies.
He wasn't too difficult to train...mind you I sometimes wonder who trains who? In any event, he is great and very loving but like Rio&Nickysmommy, I think my breeder let him go too soon...he was only 5 weeks old, so he is quite needy for affection. That's oK. I love it. |
