If you want a dog of that stature but still a great breed, consider an english mastiff. They are very gentle dogs, despite their bulk and are well known to be kid friendly. Male labs can go up to 80 lbs. but not 115 lbs, unless overfed or bred poorly. And 21-24.5'' at shoulders. Be aware that, if you encounter someone who says they breed overly large labradors (or anybreed for that matter) they are probably not breeding responsibly. |

I agree. If you are looking to buy from a reputable breeder, you are not going to find any oversized labs, simply because it is a deviation from breed standard. I am sure that you can find one eventually but mostly likely from someone who is inexperienced at breeding, and then you are looking at potential health issues throughout life.

I agree with Coppermoon and Gratajack. Any purebred dog that is oversized according to the standard, is bred by an irreputable breeder and more prone to health problems, not only because of the fact that it is oversized for it's design, but irreputable breeders also don't health test for genetic health issues, temperament or anything else. You might get lucky, as appently you are with this dog, but the odds are against you. Go with a reputable breeder every time or rescue a dog if you have the means to deal with the unknown health and behavior issues that might be present. It's so nice to save a dog from a shelter. Otherwise, stick with the standard or like it was said, choose a larger breed if you want big. That's what I would recommend anyhow. Good luck.

A large white Lab sounds like a Kuvasz or Great Pyrenees mix to me.

That is unfortunately the American mentallity. The bigger the better. I have seen rotties weigh 150lbs, german shepards 120lbs, and labs that weigh over 100lbs. We even have a breeder of pitbulls in Mass. that weigh in over 100lbs. What he is crossing them with I'd like to know. Most of the bigger sized varietys end up having hip problems. You should really look for reputable breeders who are breeding the standard for which the breed is.

The standard for a lab is 55-70 lbs. But because of their popularity there a lot of idiots who breed them XL

Labrador Crazy

This looks like an old thred but I'll post any how. Actually the breed standards are 55 to 80(our male weighs 78lbs, Rain weighs 65 and change and Dixie weighs about 70 some thing) . I've seen people here breed XL Labs and its hurtfull and sad. We breed labs and we love them the way they are. The bigger they get the more problems they'll have . I cant see why these "breeders" of XL Labs want to make them any bigger- the should know better- they're hurting my beloved Labrador Retriever by breeding them this big. Oh and want to hear some thing else. While I was sitting in line I was hearing a conversation between two people( I couldnt help it- they were talking about dogs). One said she knows some one breeding mini Labs- Yep thats why she said, mini Labs. I was like "urge" . I wanted to say some thing but bit my tonge, I instead talked to my mom quietly about it. They must be mix breeds and the people breeding them surly dont give a hoot about the conformation or breed stadards of the Labrador that true care giving breeders shoot for. Me and my family have a task of keeping and bettering the Labrador. People who breed out of standard are throwing that out the window. I see dudly noses and people breeding for them- this silver, its not breed standard but people breed them- these XL labs- its not standard but yet people breed them. They call them uniqe and sell them for bundles. Its a shame many breeds get treated this way. Oh, No disrespect intended to any one, just my opinion is all.
