I am not sure if i am doing this right? but I have a question....I am getting a new chocolate lab puppy and not sure what to expect... what is the average weight of a 8week old lab? is she going to be big? is there anything i should know or do? my sister is a vet. nurse and is helping me but I have not been able to talk to her lately and thought i might try to see what people had to say on here...I will be getting her in a couple days! I need something to look forward to and have gone through a really hard time lately and hope that she will bring some joy to my life! I have not named her yet... I can't until i see her.. but was thinking of "Asha" which i think means HOPE/life in african.?? or something with meaning...any suggestions? |

I agree on waiting until you get the puppy to see her personality and then a name will come easily.
Click here for lab info. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/labrador.htm or this one.. http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/breeds/1100161/ Labradors are big dogs and very hyper. I was planning on getting a labrador but then I realized I wasn't getting a lab anymore, i was getting a Vizsla. Read up on labs, do lots of research and good luck with the new addition of your family. |

Hi, Welcome to Global Paw!
Congrats on your new pup, I hope you'll post tons of pictures of her in our picture forum for us. We LOVE pictures. I've never had a lab so I'm not sure how big they should be at 8 weeks. You could try googling Labradors and looking at some breeder websites to see what their puppies looked like and sometimes the breeders have the weights of their pups recorded there too (not always, but you never know). Enjoy the site, and if you have any problems or are unsure about anything, feel free to PM me or one of the other dog forum guides (DFG). Cass. |

Hello and welcome!! Since labs are such a popular breed and as a result literally THOUSANDS of people are breeding them and most just to make some money and not caring about health or conformation, then labs have a HUGE range of shapes and sizes. You've got the tall lanky field labs, to the small stocky british show lab, to the average lab from down the street. I've met labs as small as 60Lbs and as big as 120Lbs!!!! It really depends on what line you're getting your pup from. Congrats on getting it btw!

I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not but I have a 6 month old male black lab mix puppy and he weighs approx. 40 lbs. When we got him he was about 12 wks old and weighed around 13 lbs!
As far as the name goes I like "Asha", that is really pretty. Also I like "Abby" or you mentioned that you hoped that she would bring some joy into your life so I think "Joy" would be a very cute and fitting name for her. |

We have 2 lab pups, a 21 week old yellow male and an 11 week old chocolate female. Their weights were/are as follows:
Buddy (male): 9 weeks: 14.7 lbs 12 weeks: 23.2 lbs 16 weeks: 35.5 lbs 20 weeks: 50.2 lbs!!!!!!!! Abby (female) 7 1/2 weeks: 8.4 lbs 11 weeks: 13.0 lbs Few suggestions I have are: 1) Get the pup a crate and use it!! Only make it big enough for the pup to enter and turn around though. This will help a lot with potty training 2) Get lots of chew toys and use this as a trade-off when you catch her chewing things she shouldn't, like your shoes. Hope this helps ![]() ~Amy |

I did some research, actually a lot of research, on finding the right dog for my family (2 kids, ages 5 and 10). It always came back to a lab. There are many variations because this is such a popular breed. I wound up getting an English Lab as they are typically bred for temperment and are not hyper. Although my dog has plenty of energy, she can turn it off when indoors. My puppy (8 months) is "fox red" (I'll post a picture soon) and turned out to be the joy of our lives. She is about 60 pounds and still growing but she is short and stocky. I think any weight that she continues to gain will be to "fill out." I've seen so many sizes of this breed that it is hard to guage how big they can get.
My one piece of advice is to crate train your pup. You will be glad that you did, especially when you leave your house for a long period of time. Also, try to get a crate that can adjust as she grows so that you can make it small enough for her so that she won't soil her "den." Good luck!!!! |
