Nervous Springer Spaniel
My Springer is now 5 years old and has steadily become very nervous when seeing other dogs. So much so she will give a very wide berth to avoid contact with people and dogs. Can anyone advise please?

I am assuming this is an English Springer Spaniel.....
if you have contact with her breeder I would talk to the breeder.... Springers do have a genetic predisposition to what they call "rage" I believe it has to do with brain chemistry and wiring..... I would have a conversation with your breeder about what she is doing.... that makes you concerned.... after you do that, there are ways to desensitize her to other dogs and people but it is time consuming and you will probably find that she learns not to act out but she never ends up liking other dogs etc. I would have a conversation with your breeder first. s |

When we would take her for a walk on the leash, our springer who was always docile & laid back, would lash out and start barking & growling whenever someone with a dog would walk by. So, we would stop, make her sit and wait for the other dog to pass, and then she would be okay. Another thing we would do, tho' which was probably not the best thing, we would unleash her, and she would just walk by and not even pay any attention! It was when she was on the leash she must have felt threatened. But, she did get bit by a pit bull who was loose when she was young, and after that, she was always more "crabby" to the other dogs she met, but she liked other dogs. She just didn't like being leashed up when they met. There was probably some obedience thing we missed with this situation!! But we never worried about it that much. We just always wanted to make sure she was a polite dog...and she usually was!
