I voted for option 3. It seems the most inclusive of the options and I know that many current members have or have had dogs who were obtained from less than the 'high standard' that you refer to in options 1 & 2, myself included.
Making prospective members defensive and uncomfortable shouldn't be the goal; educating them to think differently in the future should.

I was wondering why GP needs a code of ethics or Mission Statement after all these years? I just don't think it's necessary. We are all here to learn and educated each other. I just feel that you may scare some people away from GP. I just don't feel I can vote for any of the codes. I was wondering if anyone else feels the same way?

I know I don't post often but I have been visiting GP & reading posts for a long time now & occasionally posting.

I think if you feel it should be in writing for new members to read when they join Option #3 is the best.

There are so many new members, whether it is here or any other pet forum, who as others have already said purchased their dog from a less than desirable "breeder" or pet store, or who are still using antiquated methods of training - such as rubbing their pups' noses in their accidents or using a rolled up newspaper as discipline, etc. Hopefully they will find their way here or a like-minded forum.

In my opinion these are the exact people who should be welcomed as members in an effort to share what we have learned over the years and hopefully make their pets' lives so much better and to help them themselves become better pet caretakers and animal advocates. This would ultimately create a snowball effect and they in turn would start sharing with others who initially thought as they did.

That's my $.02 worth.

Wanted to note, Missions Statements 2 and 3 say essentially the same thing, but number 3 is worded better (though I'm not sure "consumer" is the correct term since I associate it with merchandise rather than buying animals??). I voted for #3 as it was a definite improvement on my wording. lol

Exclamation A Guide ? of Ethics

Woof Woof,,,, I am new here and what better place to start from, A question? Are we here to help? My first statement to all was if one needed help I am here. I am a person that for one has no children and our shelties are our children... So in that we treat them as one of the family. I will say this all do not. I see a need for this! that is to set a guide of HELP first to allow all to recive needed help to avoid al the above topics mentioned by you all. It is respect an love of the animal that brings us all here, I hope to be here for each other as the need should be there.. I am new here and I do not want to pee on a leg here but, to turn one away is going to drive folks that need help away.... Bless you all LASER.....

Good question, I'm getting a lot of this question.

Well, I can only assume since we were not the creators of the forum, just new owners (2 yrs new). But if I was to assume why it was not done sooner, it is because no one has taken the time before or felt their was no need.

Reason's I feel we need a mission or code:

0. I need it for my piece of mind and my need for organization

1. As a statement of Unity and purpose, whether it be general public education and/or creating a movement.

2. So I can tell others what the forum is about, not just new members but prospective guest "speakers" and interviewees, people are not willing to talk to you unless they know where you stand and their audience's stance on issues

3. So I can market GP for what it really is and not falsely represent ourselves to the public

Those are just the ones on top my head, so hope that sheds some light on the issue.

Yes, I used your #2 idea and fashioned #3. I changed "consumer" to maybe reflect your concerns.

Can you reset the vote? Now that you changed the wording I think I prefer option 2.

Well what do you not like about #3, is there something that rubs you wrong that I can change?

Edited your vote, took 1 from #3 and added to #2.

Anyone else wanna change vote

I know this is a bit nit-picky but it's been bugging me so I have to mention it.

This...
Quote:
"We are here to assist, educate and encourage all who join in a respectful manner"
Should be written...
Quote:
"We are here to assist, educate and encourage all who join, in a respectful manner"
Or
Quote:
"We are here to assist, educate and encourage, in a respectful manner, all who join".
- This last one is the way I would write it.

Otherwise it doesn't make sense (well, not to me anyway ).

Cass.

Ok Cass, You have pin pointed one of my major faults....grammer Don't worry about offending me, I'm aware and accept it.

I'm more of a technical writer, so bear with me and please feel free to offer edits if it bugs you.

I'll switch the phrases, as I love your second one.

The thing that bothered me about option #3 is that it seems to be asking anyone who joins to take a pledge, and that is a bit off-putting.

Thanks Cass! The grammar was bugging me also but I couldn't find a good way to reword it to make the misplaced modifier correct.

Kris - point taken, I'll think about it. Maybe I can come up with something better, it's late and have to get up early. Will have to wait a day or 2.

I was a bit confused as to what the point of this thread was when I read the first post a while ago. I like option #2 the most. It makes the most sense and does not sound like it is excluding anyone from posting on GP.
