Posting Rules

Perhaps I'm the only person who has a problem with this...but...

I'd like to suggest a rule about posting.

No multiple posts, where you are the last person to post a message in that thread and you wish to add more information to it - within the 'edit' tools time limit (which I believe is about an hour, isn't it?).

I've noticed (and find it annoying) that quite a few people have a habit of posting several posts one after the other (no other members posts in between) within a space of a few minutes. Sometimes with only one or two lines in each post. These could all be added to the original post using the edit tool.

Sometimes users do this to gain visibility of their topic so they can get questions answered more quickly. Posting multiple posts back to back may be a bit excessive, but I don't see a problem with doing it once or twice. After all, if you just edit the post, you stand less of a chance of people reading it because they don't think anything in it has changed. I know that if I don't see the "new post" icon, I just assume nothing has changed and I don't bother looking in the thread.

That's not what I'm talking about here. What I was referring to was this...

This is the type of multiposting I was referring to and I see it regularly. I have no problem with, after the 'edit post' time limit is up, people posting a new message under their old one.
Everyone looks at the posts at different times so the chances that no one will see your edit is slim.

I may be wrong, but I think when you edit a post it still kicks it back up as "New"

Nope, it won't.

I can edit the forum so that if you post in a thread where you have the last post already, it will automatically merge them together.

I'm sometimes guilty of this if I'm in a hurry (have dialup and slow dialup at that!) but I try not to do it very often.

I'm guilty of it as well, my reasoning is that if I notice there are several members signed on and its been five or so minutes since I posted, and then remembered there was something else I wanted to post or want to add to it then it may have already been viewed several times and I don't want the additional to get overlooked.

I tried to post a reply earlier but my internet went capoot for a short time. I don't have a problem with it, unless it is just a person's way of racking up a bunch of posts under their belt.

A few times, I think mostly on other boards.. a huge forum for folks with apple computers.. and another, nearly as large/busy pug forum, when I've gone back, and editted my post, it was TOTALLY overlooked. Too many posting, too busy, for my little edit to be noticed. A new post was my best bet for getting someone to even see what I'd added.

No, you do have the ability to edit from the time you post, but it only lasts for a certain amount of time.

If no one else has a problem with it, I'll back down and try to ignore it.
QW- there's no need to change things if no one else gets irritated by it. Thanks for having a solution though.

Once again, I would like to say that it's the posts (like the example I gave above) were there are several posts posted within minutes of each other that bother me. Not the ones with a significant amount of time between them. It's just when I see that one post is posted a 10. 41pm and then the next is 10.42pm and then the next is 10.43pm. *sigh* Never mind though. 'Tis ok.

Cass.

I don't see any problem either with this. Sometimes you just think of something additional to say and like Sonja says, your previous post may have already been viewed and you want the additional information to be read. (?) I don't think restrictions on this type of thing would be good....just added complication.
