not staffies specifically but one of my pits is dysplastic in one hip (an incidental finding on bladder x-rays and while having his hips checked at his yearly visit- he's not symptomatic).
is your pup showing symptoms? pain, stiffness, etc. bully breeds are better off than a lot of breeds when it comes to dysplasia because they tend to be so well muscled in the hind end. that helps hold poorly formed hips where they're supposed to be. keeping him at a good weight (or even on the slim side) and in good shape will help him. swimming is a fantastic if he enjoys it. the glucosamine supplement will help too, especially in the long run. if he's painful or if he gets painful in the future, there are a variety of pain medications that can help a lot. |

I've never has a dog that suffered with this problem, but I did find an interesting site you may find helpful.

Thanks Guys
Elegy He had been limping for a week or so which is how we found out in the end. We seen the vet last Thursday and he has been on the Glousomine since, He is starting to look alot better already over the last couple days. The vet explained about the pain killers they use but since he is only 3 yrs and is not too bad at the moment they want to keep him away from that for now. Funny I never even though of swimming, lol, He is too keen on water but I'm sure we can work on that. His weight is pretty stable since he has numerous alergys and is on a strict diet. I think we got a dud dog! lol ![]() |

out of curiosity, do you know if his parents' hips were x-rayed before they were bred? hip dysplasia is heritable.

We got him when he was about 18 months old when friends of ours could no longer keep him. They wouldn't have a clue about his parents but from what i've heard i'd say his mother probably had the problem, He was from a small not very well known breeder so anything is possible really. I'll certainly know better next time!!

I have an american bulldog with severe hip dysplasia (he is 3) and he is on glucosamine which actually seems to help! He has been on it for about 4 or 5 months now, and he definitly seems less ouchy. The doc says that if he had been any other dog, he would be barely getting around, but due to his lack of fat and his good muscle tone, he is doing very well.
I feel for you, its heartbreaking, if you have any questions just ask. |

Thought I would just post an update..
After 6weeks of being on the Supplement for the Hip probs there wasn't really much improvement so of we went back to the vets again.. She is going to send the x-rays away to specialists to see if there was anything she missed as the Hip probs shouldn't be causing this much pain for him. He will most probably need to go on a antinflamitry (sorry - spelling). We should find out what the story is by Wednesday. :-( |

The specialists couldn't see anything else but did suggest doing a back X-ray if we couldn't solve the problem to see if there were any issues there. The vet has decided to put him on a course of low dose antinflammitrys and bed rest (close enough to it) for two weeks to see if it is muscle damage! the poor thing is going to go insane.

awww, Im sorry.
About the back extra, Cooper had that done when he had his hips checked. His spine is on the downhill path too. He has sclerosis in his spine, and you could see the bone spicules growing between his vertebra trying to fuse the lower end of his spine in order to stabilize it. This is why he seems to have a stiff back end when he is just waking up. Once he gets going, its a lot better. I dont mean to hijack your thread, Im just relieved to find someone who can relate to this horrible issue in such a young dog. Hips http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...perxray001.jpg Spine (sorry for the bad pick, I should have retaken it) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...perxray002.jpg Cooper after the visit ![]() He couldnt walk that day, and he cried himself to sleep that night and was pathetic for the next 3 days. It was heartbreaking. |
