Wesley will be 17 in July. We think he is doing very well for his age, despite being blind and deaf. He looks so smart and still seams to have a reasonable quality of life. He loves his raw vegetables and that, be believe is the key to his long life. Does anyone know of an older Westie, and for that matter an older pedigree dog? We think this is worth a feature during the next Crufts an think they and the BBC should take it up and interview old dogs and their owners as it is quite a challenge caring for a very old dog. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to engage Crufts and the BBC to investigate what age pedigree dogs actually live to now and what are their secrets for a longer life?

We have a Westie, Wesley, who will be 17 in July. From conversations we have had we believe that is quite a record and want to know if there are any older Westies or older pedigree dogs around. We think Crufts and the BBC should take this one up this year but they will have to get their skates on and Wesley is not promising he will hang around until next year, after all he may just get a better offer. He's a good looking old man, sleeps most of the day and as he is blind and deaf he bumps into everthing and is no good as an early warning system. But he is very much more affectionate as he ages - apart from the nips when you touch something he is not happy about of course. Apart from his Hills Science Lamb and Rice pellets for senior dogs which he has had for many years now, he loves his raw vegetables - carrots, celery, peppers, mushrooms cucumber etc. No naughty treats but the odd bit of toast or breadcrumbs. When he needs a quick boost on an off day he gets a little milk which he drinks delicately like a cat and Rescue Remedy is also useful. We would love to hear from anyone with a senior four legged canine citizen in the household, and especially fellow Westies or terriers. And if you know how to get Crufts organisers and BBC journalists interested in covering this kind of story for this year please let us know.

First off, CONGRATS!! on the longevity of Wesley.
I love it when our furry companions can accompany us for so long. It's a tribute to you that he is so healthy and happy. ![]() Secondly, have you tried to contact the national Westie club to see if the can help you verify if you have the oldest Westie? They should have some sort of historian who might be able to help you out. Once you have verified that he is the oldest Westie, then all you should have to do is place a phone call to the BBC. ![]() Good luck!!! |

Thanks for the suggestion Rus. We had not heard about a Westie Club. This may only exist in the States but we will try and find one in the UK. Perhaps one of the Westie breeders here will know.
Annie - we quite agree Wesley is an excellent name for a dog - I am sure there are others who have made a similarly good choice, although we don't want to start a trend do we? I notice on one of the other threads on this site there is a discussion about a dog of 27 which is unbelievable and also a Collie who had turned 18 but sadly is no more, as well as another 17year old cross breed. So there may well be some other old westie gents or ladies around. |
