New westie pup
I am the new owner of a 14week westie - maggi she is lovely and very pleased, but her coat doesnt look like my friends westie which is all fluffly. Hers is still very short and coarse and wirey. The breader assures me that this is how it should be, has anyone got a westie with a coat that doesnt appear as fluffy as what you usually see, or will it get fluffier as she get a little older.
Any help appreciated |

I do believe that westie's DO have wiry coats and I highly doubt they are supposed to be fluffy. When you pup gets older you can groom her to get the illusion of fluffiness(lol thats not a word)
Check your breed standard if you have any doubts. |

Yup, Westies are suppose to have wirey hair. Your friends westie either has a bad (ie: not to standard) coat or might not be a pure westie.
Cass. EDIT: Excerpt from the WHWT standard. Quote:

Also, your pup is still very young. Some dogs coats come in as they get older. My huskies are like that. Their coats didn't look fluffy at all when they were younger, and didn't fill out till about a year and a half- 2 years.

hey there! We got a westie last month, Payton (been trying to post pics but It wont let me). And I thought something was wrong with his coat, too lol. But its supposed to be course and wirey. Not soft. Its called a hard coat. he's a riot, we love him. He's a whole lot different than our husky mix, Dottie. I dunno how to post pics on here but here's his dogster page

LOL, that's funny. My parents got a Westie a while ago (she's 7 months now)...and her name is Maggie as well...too funny. She still doesn't have her fur all in yet either. I guess it takes time to get the "Westie look". Her body is starting to fluff out, the her face in in that in between stage of looking a bit ratty...haha. She'll fluff out in no time i'm sure.
This was Maggie at about 7 weeks. |

like my schnauzer, the coat of a westie won't fluff on it's own. The pictures you commonly see are westies in a show cut. To achieve the "fluffienes"(that's funny
) the coat is usually blow dried and brushed. Unfortunatly, this fluff only lasts a day or 2 and then it's back to being wirey, and it won't change to fluffy as the dog grows. I am always so excited to pick Chloe up from the groomer because she is so soft and fluffy! Congrats on your new baby, I LOVE westies and was actually looking for one before I found Chloe. Lindsey |

I have a westie and the older he has gotten the more wiry hair (which is standard for a westie) he has gotten. I have found that brushing him often helps to keep his coat more soft, which is the way I like it! I think the fluffiness is the way groomers groom westies not the way they truly are. My dog looks like a little old scruff! But that is one of my favorite looks about the Westie breed!

Westie Pup
I just got a 3 month old Westie..its coat its the exact same...i took my concern to the breeder and she said that the father of my Westie was the same when when she got him and then took me to se him and the dog had the thckest and fluffiest coat i had ever seen on a Westie, looked liked a baby sheep dog. So in time im sure your Westies coat will thicken and become more fluffy.
Hope this helps. |
