'Tis the season...LOL.
I don't know about Rat Terriers, but I know my two just finished up one of their seasonal blowouts......what a mess......haha.
I had enough fur each day to make 5 small dogs out of it!

When you say 'shedding badly' do you mean there are bald patches or it's shedding like a regular dog...but there's more of it? How much is too much?
If the vet can't find anything wrong with it and it's not shedding so much that the dog has bald patches, I'd say it's just doing what's natural.

Just give the dog a good brush each day and that should reduce the amount of hair that ends up on you and your furniture.

Cass.

Unhappy

he's shedding to the point that underneath the white fur you can now see his dark markings on the skin. they could never be seen before.

Hi there!
Well you have received some great advice already Cass has great suggestions about brushing out that coat I use a curry brush to strip out the under coat. You will be amazed at the difference and the quality of the coat after a good brush with the curry.
The other thing is what type of food are you feeding? Rat Terriers are notorious for being allergic to corn which is a common filler in some dog foods.....so check your dog food. Usually the allergy will manifest as "hot spots" and excessive shedding.

I'm not sure how everyone else feels about this stuff, but it seems to work for us.

Brewers Yest with Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

Ruger had really dry skin so we've had to use something with high fatty acids like that dermacaps or something like that. We've notice that his hair doesn't shed as much with it either.

Also Shed-Stop or any omega fatty acids. A good one is flax oil. I buy the gel caps and just squeeze it into the food.

I have 2 Jack Russells and they shed all year round. M one has a very thin coat and you can see her markings and the male he has a very thick coat. I guess its just the type of dog. Sorry I didnt really help much did I?

June/July is the biggest month of the year for shedding. Your dogs coat, with regular brushing will be the best it is all year in July/August. It MAY be seasonal shedding. My St. B has just blown all his coat and only the outer coat remains, you can sure see his skin if you look hard, and he is perfectly healthy. Excessive shedding can also be a sign of some systemic problems, such as Thyroid. If the shedding is acconpianied by a rash, oilt coat or itchy skin, have the vet check it out for sure.

One other thing that I would check is to see when your dog got vaccinated and compare that to when the excessive shedding started. When I worked at the animal hospital I had seen a couple of dogs have vaccine reactions by blowing out there undercoat and tons of shedding.

I forgot all about brewers yeast. I used it religiously when I was raw feeding, and it was wonderful. After we moved and I ran out,. I just forgot to get more. Thannks for the reminder!

Flax seed oil is sold wherever vitamins are sold. Wal-Mart, Target, grocery stores, drug stores and so on. You can get the 1000 miligram or 1200 miligram. I use the 1000 on my small dogs.
