newbie looking for advise on JRT's and cats.

Hi there, i'm seriously thinking of getting a JRT inthe next few months. I'm in the process of having an extension built at the moment so want to make sure that is all done and dusted first.
I have a cat and wondered if anyone else has brought a new dog into the home and how did they go about introducing them to each other. Any tips please? My cat is a soppy persian who's very laid back. Does anyone think getting a dog might be a bad idea?

It depends on the energy of the dog- Is it hyper or mellow? I think two mellow animals would get along better than one mellow/one hyper, though they can also get along.
I'd leave the dog/pup in the crate and let the cat investigate it, rather than letting the dog/pup investigating the cat.

Make sure the cat has a safe area, away from the dog. Whether that is a gated room, or a shelf, whatever. Although, any gate a cat can jump over, a JRT should be able to go over as well....

This is a bit of advice that is from our hand out we give when we re home dogs.Hope it maybe of some help.

Cats & dogs work on different signals which is why new meetings must be well supervised.Cats much prefer to smell things without meeting or touching them before they interact. They have a flight instinct so will often run from any thing that is not familiar to them and of course dogs want to chase which means they will chase a cat that runs from them. Do not allow your dog to chase, pounce or wrestle with the cat even if you do think it is just playing as a corned cat will strike out and cause a lot of harm to a dogs face.
It is not unusual for a cat to disappear when a new dog comes into the home. They will often just want to sit on a high place or out of sight and observe whilst they figure out if the dog will hurt them. This is normal and can take a few days sometimes longer. Do not force them to meet face to face the cat may panic. Let them make their peace in their own time. A crate is a good way of introducing them. You can put the dog in crate nearby whilst you feed and fuss cat. If dog growls or barks tell them no. and vice versa you can also put cat in crate whilst dog has some attention. As long as they see you treating them both the same this will help them settle in together. Gradually build their confidence up together.

I have 2 cats and have had them for about 10 years...and about 2 years ago my husband and I decided to get a puppy. We ended up getting an 8 week old jack russell. His name is rip. I just left the cats go about there normal business and when the dog ran into them they seemed fine and all he wanted to do is play. Then about 4 months later we got another jack russell, her name is lillie. They are both very hyper and never stop running. My cats just love them. The one cat will sprawl out int he middl eof the floor and want to play with them. They have never done anything to the cats int he 2 years that we have had them. I just let hte cats go about there business. Now if the dogs where to do something to the cats then I would worry about it. But everyone told me my dogs were going to kill the cats cause that was there nature, but they like each other!!!

I hope that helped and good luck and you will lov eyour jrt.
