I've heard/read that Schnauzers were bred as Pinschers that have a wire hair coat. So if they are a type of Pinscher and the are small (I'm talking about the minis) are they related to the Min Pin? Sorta like a wire haired version of it? I'm just so
. Anybody have any info on this? |

LOL I'm also biased Scott!
Ritz - I'm definitely not the authority on this but I have done a fair amount of research on this breed since I'm owned by one. LOL. The Mini was originally bred from the Standard Schauz, possibly Affens and Poodles (small size). Either of those could explain the wire-hairedness. I've never heard or read that they originated from the Pinscher group. |

Ok, thanks. I was totally confused.....lol I read something (in a Schnauzer magazine) that says on a time line in 1879, 'Wire-Haired Pinschers (Schnauzers) exhibited for the first time at the German International show.'
I guess that made me think that the were related to the Min Pins. But after going back and checking the magazine it also says, 'Historians believe the breed was developed by mixing the Spitz with the Dog of Bologne, the Poodle, the Gray Wolf Spitz and the old German Pinscher stock. (I never saw that part in the magazine untill now! lol) Anyways, thanx for clearing that up!! ![]() |

Schnauzers haven't totally captured my heart yet. (Although the Standards are pretty cool.) I'm in love with the Bully breeds. (And I'm begging to have an interest in Dobes.
There are just to many breeds out there.....lol |

Ritz - Are you thinking about getting a Schnauzer? That's wonderful if you are!
The Bully breeds are incredible dogs, I agree. Not ever having owned one though, I wouldn't know how they really compare to schnauzers, but I definitely recommend at least visiting a breeder to find out more about the little bearded guys. I couldn't ask for a more loving, bright, humorous and independent pup. His personality is so distinct! At times, he seems so regal and handsome, like a little king looking over his domain. LOL |

I wasn't totally sold on schnauzers, either - before I got one. My boyfriend was adamant - he had a mini when he was a kid. I previously thought the schnauzers always looked like they were scowling! But let me tell you, I couldn't ask for a more adorable, silly, intelligent, happy, protective, energetic, and loving dog. I can't see myself with any other breed.

Nope, I'm not thinking about getting one, but if I did get one, it would be a black Standerd. lol I do think that Schnauzers are one of the most intelligent breeds out their though.
Last night my mom brought up a whole bunch of her old books from the basement and I was flipping through them. One of them was a little phamplet thingy about Schnauzers. (My mom used to own one when she was in highschool.) I was like,"ok, I got to see this," so I opened it up and read the first sentence and guess what............it was wrong!!! It said that there was no difference what-so-ever between the three Schnauzer breeds aside from size. That isn't true. And it also had ways to trian a Schnauzer in it and man.......I feel sorry for any dog that lived during the lifetime of scruffshakes, alpha rolls, holding mouths shut, screaming, and swating with the news papers.......yesh.....I was reading it and I just started laughing and saying, "Well, that won't work!" and "That isn't true!" and "Yesh, these guys are stupid....." lol. They also had a puppy (as in 8 weeks old) wearing a choke-chain! They were training an eight week old puppy with a choke-chian! Yesh! |

I must admit, I use to not be able to stand the Miniature Schnauzer (or any schnauzer) but the more I see them, the more they grow on me. one bite me once and I've always been a little scared of them *I know, its stupid* anyway I love cragar's white... it makes him a doll. They are a really cute breed.

(Ok, maybe not the clicker as much......but lots of praise and really yummy Beggin Strips! lol) I ocasionally use a Choke-chain on Blackie, but I try not to use it a whole bunch. He is a very dominant dog so sometimes just the lure and reward training doesn't always work the best with him. Mind, he still gets lots of praise, but the Choke-chian just helps me give him a slight corection when needed, since the punishments used in positive trianing sometimes don't work the best with him. (If I used a choke-chian on Rose though, she'd wilt! lol) |

You're right, Ritz, about schauzers size making a big difference in tempermant. They are all three very different. It's odd to think about but that's how it is. I honestly don't think I could handle a giant schnauzer. As much as I love their look and statelyness (is that word? LOL), I'm not nearly experienced enough with dogs to control a giant or make sure he had a job to do constantly.

Am i the only one on this board who owns a GIANT..If so i am the authority on the question. Yes size does matter...Brutus my show-prospect BLACK GIANT was born on Oct 27,2004. He just got weighed yesterday and he weights in at 29lbs. So yes, he is a hulking Giant already and should reach 90lbs easily (NO FAT lol). He is in the process of getting his ears tapped right now. It is true, u shou l dbe a physically fit person to own a large breed, and definetely have a strong ALPHA male dominated role. This dog likes to push people around. He was the largest of his littermates and he has carried his attitude from there, but i am in the process of telling HIM who is boss. Actually he already knows it, due to the fact that he got in trouble for munching on all my house plants a couple of weeks ago and he got reprimanded for it. It is an ongoing process...However these guys can be very protective and VERY dangerous to other dogs..especially large dogs. It says in all my books, as well as from my breeder, to handle the dog very carefully around other large male dogs....My info tells me he likes to seriously go after dobermans and the like because he sees them as a threat, and with his large muscular body, noble courage, and terrier like speed "he could easily best the challenger". So yes, it can be a challenge raising one, but it has become very rewarding.

There is a woman in a nearby town that does the Standard Rescue for this area. One of her rescues just had babies a couple of weeks ago. I've been invited to go out to see them. I'm pretty excited. I've never been around any of the other schnauzers except for the minis.
