In Search of Yorkie

I was looking for some advice as I am in search of a Baby or Young Yorkie in the Midwest. I live in West Des Moines, IA but am willing to travel in IA and parts of MO, KS, MN, or NE. As I know there are a lot of bad breeders out there does anyone have any suggestions about Yorkie Breeders in the Midwest?

Thanks

-Kay-

The best way to find a great breeder is to go to local dogshows and talk to people there.

Welcome, I would start at dog shows as well. Do not count out rescues. We recently got a yorkie puppy from a rescue in Indiana. Just look for rescues that specialize in small breeds. They are rare, but they do happen so do not count them out.

Thanks for all the input I continue to watch rescues as this would be my preference. -Kay-

Have you checked www.petfinder.com or www.petharbor.com ? This could get you started on some different rescues. I've found out about rescues that I never knew/heard of.

Including the suggestions above, I would say to get as much information about Yorkshire Terriers as possible... join one of the breed specific forums and talk to other owners. Yorkies are a great breed but they really have some special needs (and associated costs) as it pertains to their care.

One Yorkie forum I don't recommend is YorkieTalk. Filled to the gills with irresponsible breeders and the people who buy from them.

In addition to the above suggestions, you can type into a search engine like google "Yorkie rescue IA" or "small dog rescue IA" (or surrounding states). You should get some results. Let me know if you need any help and I'll do some searching, too. You might also check out the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America: http://www.ytca.org/rescue.html

Good luck, and welcome to Global Paw!

Good luck in your search. Maybe you could attend some dog shows and ask the Yorkies owners there about finding a nice baby.

Hi IAGal!!!

Shaerenae and Winjammin live in town with you there. I'm sure they would be very helpful in finding a pup with you. Not to mention they are great people!!

Thanks, Julie! We already know IAGal very well...LOL We both used to work with her and she's a good friend of ours, and she and her daughter come to some of our dog shows. She's in the process of applying for a rescue Yorkie, and has her home visit tonight. We got the call Tuesday night for the referral. So, keep your fingers crossed everyone that all goes well!
