New JRT!!!
Well, it's happened...I broke down and got a small dog!! Actually, it's my husband's, but I need to housebreak him first. His name is Max and he is an 8 week old JRT....and soooo cute!! My GS thinks he is one of her puppies, and continues to "over mother" him. I've had him about 48 hrs, and only one accident in the house so far. Of course, I take him out about every 15 minutes!! LOL
I know the whole proceedure with house training, crate training, etc. But for those of you who own JRT's....what training worked best for you? I know all about the breed and their temperment, I was just looking for the best training method. And no offense to anyone, but I'm not into clicker training...call me old fashioned!! Any tips??? P.S. He will eventually be a "trucker dog"....he already likes to ride in the car!! |

Well congratulations on your JRT you should probably get a large sleeve of tennis balls and keep extra on hand, grease up your pitchin arm and get ready for the ride of your life LOL! JRT's love to chase balls, kids, cats, dust bunnies, sunbeams, carpet fuzz, just about anything that moves and some things that don't move. Have a great time with the little guy.

LOL Linnie!! That's what I am noticing!! He fails to understand that I can be just as stubborn.....He started up the stairs to the 2nd floor, got about 6 steps up and decided he wanted to come down. Well, he whined and cried for about 5 min like it was the end of the world. I had a friend of mine on the phone who also owns a Jack, and he said "don't you help him down!! Leave him alone, he'll figure it out. If you help him now, you'll be doing it forever!!" So I left him there, and sure enough, he got down on his own to receive lots of hugs!! But my friend said the same thing..."good luck training him"
Good news this morning though, I had taken him out to pee, then we came in and I was in the bathroom. He came running in, whinning and spinning around, and I noticed he had to poop. So we rushed outside and he did it!! LOL I know it sounds funny and trivial, but the way I see it, he at least was trying to let me know and didn't go on the floor. Yeah for Max!! LOL Not bad for having him 48 hours!! |

Thats a great start for you and your little guy! Continue to set him up for success and training will come along. JRT's are notorious for being hard headed but with your being forewarmed and your determination see his training through by not falling for his shenanegans he doesn't have a chance.

Thanx Sheltiemama....I keep thinking, like you said, to set him up for the good things,....he seems to respond well to verbal praise, and is getting it down.."go potty" is sinking in!! I have to remember, one thing at a time. House training is a priority right now!! LOL

congrats on your baby, thay are little monkeys arnt they, if there is troubble a jack will find it lol, they have a great personaillity and can take longer to train than some breeds as they always aks why! but hang in there and you will have a really great little companion, a typical jack can be unpredicatable as they are a terrier, oh and beware of rabbit holes they just love them, and are also very good at getting stuck!

Thanx guys! As for pooping outside, he gets lots of rubs and play time when he does. He has mastered going up the stairs, but complains about coming down. He does it, but gripes the whole time!! LOL And he has decided, that he will listen to me when he feels like it....so this is really a challenge. But he is proving to be very smart, and keeps me and my GS busy all the time!!

Congrats on your new addition. I have 2 JRT's. My oldest is 13 months and the youngest is 9 months. My older JRT trained pretty good, just have to be consistant with taking them out and mine love to me on a schedule. I used to take small treats outside adn when they did there business they got a treat right then and there. If you wait til you get back inside they forget why they are getting a treat.LOL Oh and they LOVE to run and chase each other outside. I give them outside time as much as possible and walk them almost anyday. Dont worry they are very bright and will pick up things right away..The best of luck!!
