New Tactic(a bit long)
As you all know, I am the proud owner of a JRT pup, currently 3 1/2 months old. And, as I have posted before, I was having some potty training issues. I have been working with the treats whenever he goes outside, using "go potty" and "go poop" continuously. However, I am still having problems. I have been using the crate, which is the correct size, but he still seems to want to urinate in it. So I am employing a new tactic, and want to know what you think.
I have put a tie-out in the yard, and plan to put him out whenever he cannot be supervised,...this includes as soon as I get home from work, during supper, and housecleaning. This evening is the first run at it. You would think I chopped off his legs!! The screaming and howling is unbelievable!! He is soooo stubborn, he thinks he can get away from the stake in the ground, so he has been fighting it for 30 minutes. Not hard enough to get hurt, but fighting none the less. He has toys out there, and no, he's not going to be one of those dogs who is tied out constantly. I'm just using it as an alternative to the crate and exercise pen. (which I am sure he would climb or dig out of). The weather is great, and he will still be in his crate while I am at work. Plus, he naps on the couch with me, and sleeps in the bed with me. He is just so stubborn, that he would do anything to get out of going potty outside. Example: Yesterday, I got home and took him straight out to potty. He did all of his business (in large amounts...lol) and we played a bit and came inside. An hour later, we went out again and nothing. 30 minutes later, we went out again...nothing. So I waited another 30 minutes, and took him out to no avail. So we came in and I fed him. He was still crunching his last bite when he walked right past me and proceeded to poop on the floor. Of course, I jumped up and grabbed him yelling "NO NO NO!!!!" and rushed outside. Well, that scared him and ended all intentions of him finishing. We were outside for a LONG TIME. So I took him out at 9pm just before bed...nothing. Ok, we go to bed, and he is trying to get down and whinning...so we go out again, where he finally gets rid of what was left from the scolding!! I tell ya, I am so frustrated. I try to project the "take your time, I've got all day" feeling so as not to stress him out when we are outside, but so far, nothing is working. One person told me to rub his nose in it, but I'm not into that. Everyone else I know who has a JRT, had them housetrained in a week. Do I just have an exceptionally stubborn little man??? ![]() BTW, I think this should probably be moved, since it's a training issue, not necessarily a terrier issue!! Sorry!! |

It must be a small dog issue
Chloe (min. schnauzer) was STILL having the occasional accident at more than a year old AFTER she had already learned the "go potty" command. She is very smart but potty was the one thing she had a hard time getting. How long is your JR in the crate during the day? I know your frustrations, It seems like you are doing everything the right way but they just don't get it! Good luck to you! Lindsey |

I was trying to avoid the potty pads, so as to avoid going in the house all together. Yesterday was a good day, I pulled his morning water 2 hours before work, and he didn't pee in the crate.
And there weren't any accidents all day. We will see how today goes!! Maybe the one hour of being tied out helped as well. |

How old is he now? Jacks are very stubben as you have found out, they also have a big ego and get embarrassed quickly when told off, I dont think tying him up will be a good idea as he will go mental and they tend not to stop until they get what they want! Jacks can take longer to train my boy took ages but the girl was a lot quicker, they can lapse in their training very easily when they reach there teenage years.
