a few rat terrier questions
amlet is a rat terrier/pom mix but believe me...he is very much a rat terrier. he looks like one, completely acts like one and just is one! this is actually good cause through research i've realized i love the breed and my next dog will most likely be a rat terrier. anyway, through research i've found some things interesting. first of all, i've heard rat terriers can be prone to allergies. well amlet has a light brown color and can see like pink around his eyes on his skin. once in a while i see him rubbing his eyes too. it really isn't bad, and it seems to barely bother him. could this be an allergic thing? and does anyone else experience this? also, amlet is a little over five months, but i can't get him into any puppy training right now. i probably wouldn't be able to until he was seven months, and then the place i want to go offers it as adult dog training (once they are over six months). he has basic skills, but he really probably should get into something because he has all that rat terrier energy. is it bad that i can't get him into something for a few months? i'm going to ask for the petco training course for christmas from my parents so i can start that in like january or so.

They are pron to allergies, especially corn allergies. The best thing for it is benadryl.......here is a link to a forum that is all Rat Terrier people. Ratter Chatter link
There are some VERY knowledgeable people on there who have been dealing with the breed for many many years and I am sure they would like to help you. Have you taken him to the vet to get the Vets opinion on weather or not it is allergies, or at least weather or not they think it is allergies? From what I have seen usually when an RT gets an allergies it is in the form of "hot spots" little areas where the skin is pinker then normal and there might be some hair-loss in that hot spot area. A friend of mine had one that had some pinkness and some hair-loss around the eye and it was a corn allergie. She bought dog food with no corn in it and the allergies went away. Does the food you feed him have corn in the ingedients list? |

yeah, the food has corn in it...actually the first ingredient (beneful). i've also been feeding him pro plan, cause the vet gave me a free thing of it in his puppy starter kit. so i've been switching him on to the proplan. i eventually won't feed him either of these though , but right now i just want to keep him on something for a bit. when i first got him, i changed his food like three times, and i dont want to switch him again just yet. proplans first ingredient is chicken i think, so it doesn't seem to have as much corn. i'll probably switch him to something else when his proplan is out in a few weeks, and i'll get something without corn in it.
thanks!! |

Here, it might be a good idea to read this thread
http://www.globalpaw.com/thread6858.html and learn about the different foods and whats good and what isnt. Beneful is definitly not a food you want your dog to be eating. Good Luck with the allergies, I hope its just a corn reaction because it can be a menace to diagnose. |

^^ I agree, diet is very important. You don't have to spend a fortune, but even feeding a better brand that's a little more money than you would pay for the other stuff, you end up feeding less as they get more nutrients from the food.
My head is foggy right now (sick) so I hope that run-on sentance made some sense! ![]() |

I've got 2 rat terriers and I think maybe one of my dog Kasia might have some sort of allergies but i'm not really sure either. I notice she sneezes a lot and her eyes are sometimes watery.
As for food we used to feed our rat terriers Ulta Nutro but we recently switched them over to Canidade. Just wanted to let you know though that rat terriers are a great breed! Our first one was Kali, which we got from Ratbone Rescue and after getting her we just had to get another one. They are a character!! |
