Staffordshire

Have any of you heard of the English Staffordshire? And if you have is if a different breed or just another name for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier?

.

They sometimes call its the English Staffordshire Terrier because there is an American Staffordshire Terrier, but the English is the original so is usually just called the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The American breed is derived from it.

Actually not really, the american breed is derived from a number of breeds with SOME english staffordshire bull terrier influence but nowhere near as much as people often think. The american staffordshire terrier is actually pretty much just another name for the american pit bull terrier.

Yeah, but the whole bull dog group are derived from the staffordshire terriers? Most things i've read say that the staff is an ancestor of all the breeds? I mean, its like everyone says, they all look incredbly similar?

The modern American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) can trace its roots back to England and the early 19th century. Crosses between “bully” type dogs and terriers eventually produced the modern APBT. As far as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, authorities generally agree that the breed can be traced back to the Mastiff-like dogs through the old Bulldog which, when crossed with British terriers, produced the first "Bull and Terriers." Books published in the early 1800s which refer to "Bull and Terriers," "Pit Dogs", and "Fighting Dogs" confirm that the cross existed at that time.

The Bull Terrier's predecessors were developed for the purposes of pit fighting, in the middle of the 19th century. The "sporting enthusiasts" of that time loved to bet on dog fights, bull fights, bear fights, etc. Some of them decided to mate two formidable breeds of dog, the Bull Dog and the Black and Tan Terrier (which is now extinct). They wanted to combine the Bull Dog's tenacity, courage and high threshold of pain, with the terrier's lightening speed, agility and unsurpassed ratting (eg.,killing) instinct. What resulted was an extremely rugged dog, well suited for pit fighting, which is still popular in parts of the world to this day. It was not a pretty dog. It had bowed legs, and its colors have been described as "smutty". It was called the Bull and Terrier dog...now known as the Bull Terrier.

The Bulldog goes back to antiquity first writings around the year 1210 with the mention of the " Bull Dogge" appearing in letters and historical accounts. Every physical characteristic we associate with the breed was either strengthened or deliberately bred in. Mastiff blood was added to give not only courage and determination, but power and activity. Pug blood brought the size down, broadened the chest, and shortened the legs.

The Staff is far from the beginning of all these breeds.

Staffies...

I have heard a lot of owners / breeders suggest that we all start calling them "staffy-bulls" or "English staffordshires" in an attempt to avoid a mental conotation of "pitbull".

the origional Staffordshire Bull Terrier (pitdog ) was descended from the origional bulldog some said the SBT is from the bulldog direct but undoubtably there was crosses made with some terriers or why would they have been called bull terrier ...the A.P.B.T. was bred from the fighting dogs of Ireland and England taken over to America when they emigrated

i am from england and it is a shame that both breeds get mixed up, the same problem happens here eventhough pitbulls are illegal (which doesn't stop people from owning them). the other day the dog warden came around my house having had a complaint from a neighbour that my staffies were infact pitbulls. the warden and i had a good laugh we she realised what they were

i have 3 english staffordshire bull terriers and the reason for the addition of the country in its title is because you get various different breeds from around the world i.e. each different breeed have slight differences. the american stafford is taller, the english is more stocky and set to the ground, where as the irish stafford seem to be modifying in colour 'blue' for instance.
