Smile Moms with kids and their toy dogs

I was wondering are there any of you who have your little dog and kids at home too. I do and was wondering if some of you are young and have kids with your hairy kids too.
What do you like to do as a family? Do you go on outings? Do they sleep with your kids? I would like to hear some experiences your children have had with your pets.

For instance we were in PetSmart one time and a big dog not sure what breed started barking at my son when he was a baby. Pepper our late Yorkie got inbetween the stroller and the big dog and barked at the big dog. I was so proud of him and my son and Pepper had a special bond. Pepper even let me know when my son would cry he would come and get me out of bed and sometimes sleep by my sons cradle. It was a wonderful thing to see and it deepend our love for Pepper. I have many wonderful stories like that.

Can't wait to hear.

Well, I guess most people have animals rather than kids here. Oh well. I hope there is not a biased here about dogs and kids. But as nice and encouraging as everyone seems so be here I am sure that is not the case.

csz - quite a few people here have kids and dogs. I know the preach safety above all else, but that is what they always say. Kids not my style though, I am already screwed up enough to think what they would be like if I raised kids I would rather be the crazy fun uncle, w/ a million and half dogs...

ps - I always have trouble with little dogs at petsmart, never the big ones...

I have 5 dogs and 2 kids one of them is just a toddler.
My breed is a pretty small breed however they are not toy sized.
I believe as long as you teach the child/children to respect the dogs, how to hold them and to make sure there safety is important even tot he toddler you are OK. Allot of it depends on your home situation and how your own children are.
My son is ALL boy and wild and crazy however he listens and loves the dogs. he is very kind, gentle and loving with them. He is also never unsupervised.

I don't have kids myself (and never will), but I have a toy dog (Chihuahua) and a four year old nephew.

It's sometimes difficult for them to interact because Jesse (my dog) doesn't like children. All their interaction is completely supervised and Ethan has been(and is still being) taught to be gentle, slow and quiet when interacting with Jesse. So far, it's working wonders.

Jesse would always run away from Ethan to begin with and now he'll sit quietly and let Ethan pet him. He never growls when Ethan attempts to pick him up (something he won't allow other kids to attempt) and is much more tolerant of Ethan because Ethan's much more controlled around him than he use to be. Jesse is also comfortable sitting on the lounge or on the floor next to Ethan...just 'hanging out'. Which is actually really nice to see and Ethan understands that if Jesse growls, he's not being mean...it's just his way of saying 'enough'.

I've let Ethan walk Jesse a little way and he really seemed to like it (they both did actually) but that's as far as outings go with my little furkid and my nephew together. LOL

As for Jesse and other kids.....forget about it. He's not having it. LOL

Cass.

lol, that's what I always say! I tell my sister she's having enough for both of us, 'cause she wants a bunch of kids anyway.

I have a little cousin (he just turned 4) who likes Missie until he sees her. lol He names his little stuffed animals after my animals, so he'll occasionally tell me this one's "Missie" or he'll act like a dog and say, "I'm Missie!" But whenever he comes to my house and she barks at him (from the other side of the door or sometimes just out of excitement) he "doesn't like Missie" lol He's never around dogs, so the barking is startling for him. She gets overexcited with little kids (I think their running around and high-pitched voices upset her), so it's a little scary for him when she comes flying out and wants to jump on him (yes, my dog has no manners. One of those things little dogs get away with ). I wish we'd made some progress like Cass's nephew, but it's hard when Missie's so hyper! You'd think at 7 years old she'd be calming down some.

Well, I am still in high school, and I really don't like little kids too much. They are fine in small doses (I actually really like kids, just not ALL the time), such as family gatherings and such, but I would never be able to handle one by myself.

Mycousins are little, and have NO idea how to handle a dog, so Mandi just avoids them. When Mandi first saw my cousin (2 yo), I guess she though she was toy, and was doing her little lounging and barking thing that she does with her toys. (when she is playing be herself) I thought that was really cute!

My brother is 10 though, and I think that it is really cute when he is laying on the couch or something with her, and if she hears a noise, she will immediatly jump up and start barking at whatever it is. Usually, if we are paying attention to her, she will not bark unless we "encourage" it. I guess that is the only kid interaction my dog has.

Sorry my stories sucked!
Sam

I have 2 Shih Tzu's and 3 kids, although none of them were really young when we got the first dog. I think the youngest was 7. My kids were around a lot of animals when they were toddlers, so they knew how to treat animals.

My kids are now 11, 15 and 17 and they all want to have a Shih Tzu or 2 when they move out.

Cass. that is so great you are giving him that opportunity.

~Mulrooney- Yeah kids have to be taught how to treat dogs definitely. Yeah you have to watch out for those little dogs.

~Tiny That is so funny that he does that.
~Linda When my son has had a bad day at Preschool he will lay down with Macey and he feels so much better after he talks to her. Macey is a good listener he says. I have really seen the emotional benefits in my home of having her here with us. I guess everyone has a different feeling or take on the purpose of their animal in the home and they are all precious and wonderful.
Thanks guys for sharing a little glimps of your kids (your own or someone elses) and their interaction with your dogs.

My mother never let me have a dog b/c she didn't like them. My dad loved dogs and that love passed on to me. As soon as I moved out a rescued a dog from the shelter. I have always felt like my tough times in school would have been a little less tough if I would have been able to fill the need. Of course now I have kids as well and I want them to share in that joy of taking care of a living creature and all of the rewards that they will get from that.
Thanks

Dogs love unconditionally, that in itself helps kids. It's a tough world out there and kids sure can have a tough time with teasing and such...but they know that their dog loves them no matter what. Nice feeling when you are young.
My son is 16 1/2 now but he has an unbreakable bond with Shadow.

Shadowkins, that is so true the world has gotten tougher on kids and to have that unconditional love from a true friend is all the more for familys to give a pet a much needed home. ****Of course if they are responsible and it is a loving environment for the dog. Some families get dogs and they stay pinned up out back and they are given the necessities, but they are not played with and do not get the physical and mental attention they need*****
I think there are a lot of good people out there and they can and do give these animals great homes. What a great benefit to the children it is. They have those precious memories forever. I know my husand talks often about his cocker spaniel he grew up with. He has some hilarious stories. The kids love to hear about them.
Thanks for that comment.

I dont have any really small dogs. But I have two kids..boys...5 and 8. Boomer our Shep. is really a good dog with the kids. He out weighs them both by almost double...but in general is pretty easy going with them. There are times I have to intervene...Boomer can play rough sometimes. But they have a nice bond. I am looking forward to Boomer aging some and starting to get a little more laid back. Right now if the kids try to lay on him, or relax with him...he is all play. But they have their moments!! Mostly its just Boomer getting into their rooms and looking for something good to chew or snack on! LOL.

Our newest girl Lola though, is a pretty laid back, lovey dovey girl. She lets the kids love and pet her as long as they want. My kids have developed a nice bond with her already. They sit together a lot and play video games, or just watch tv.

I had a lab/rottie mix growing up that I adored! He used to play softball with us kids and help get us over the home plate by stealing the ball if we needed a few extra seconds!!

I think its great for kids to be around animals. Dogs or cats. We have a cat that my oldest son is terribly fond of. The cat sleeps with him every night. And when he takes a cat nap...its always in that bed.

I agree with the animals giving the kids the unconditional love. The first few days Lola was home, my oldest son had a rough day in school with some of his friends...and he sat and loved on her for a long time. She just sat and let her head rest on his knee for as long as he needed.
