Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Weight???
Hi everyone. We have a Cav and he is 10 monts old. Our vet says he is big for a cav, but not overweight. He weighs 23.4 pounds. Everything we read says they are maximum 18 pounds. He sure does not look or feel overweight, and is very healthy and energetic. What goes on here? We would be thankful for an experienced Cav owner to respond. Best regards. Mike

I'm not an experienced cav owner, but I've done a lot of extensive research on the breed (including talking to local cav owners) and what I understand is that there is no weight limit for cavs (except loosely in the show rigng, that they're more concerned about proportion. You probably just a larger cav that's weight is proportional to it's body. If your vet isn't concerned about his weight, I wouldn't worry. And remember that cavs are one of the largest of the toy breeds.
On the side, have you had his heart checked? Cavs statistically have 50% chance of developing a pretty bad murmur, so make sure to get regular check ups. |

Weight problem is solved.
Thank you very much to Bohemianfey and Nulla_Nulla. We think we pay too much attention to the "show dog people" on line. This is where we are going to stop listening to their opinions. We have no intentions of showing our dog. He is a family member and that is all. Our vet and breeder both assure us that he is healthy and his heart is O.K. We know the risks of mitral valve disease with these loveable little guys, but we will do everything to keep him healthy. We walk him and give him a quality diet. He sure does not look "fat" to us or our friends. His ribs can easily be felt, and he is proportional. Thanks again for the advice. Best regards. Mike & Roni

I was going to ask you if you knew for sure that you Cav was a purebred. Obviously other types of Spainiels are bigger. Seeing as the average Cav doesn't usually exceed 18lbs, I would say that maybe 23lbs would be possible as a full grown, but you say the dog is only 10 months old, still more room to grow. If the dog is proportional and healthy and you aren't planning on showing anyway, then it really doesn't matter. Saying that, some dogs do go over the average regarding weight and are definately purebred.
