Talking New Yorkipoo! Any advice??

Hi all.
Tomorrow I am going to pick up a 10 week old Yorkipoo!
I am so very excited!
I have never owned a Yorkipoo or any dog in the toy group.
Do you have any advice for a new owner of a small fur baby??

TIA!

Jill

Congratulations! I've always had big dogs so the only advice is what I have heard over the years. The first thing that comes to my mind is for you to learn to walk using a shuffle so as to not accidently step on the little one.

I'm sure there are other members here who will be able to give you much more valuable advice!

sign up for obedience training after it's had all it's shots, start working on sit, come and stay, crate train, feed either real food or a premium kibble, and NEVER feed from the table while your eating. By the way, you didn't say if it's a male or female and what name you picked out. Can't wait to see pictures.

Congrats on your new yorkie/poodle mix. I hope you'll post pictures for use to "Oooo...and Awwwww" over.

I agree with what Calgal said, obedience class may not seem like it's important for a small dog but it is. I would also advise you to socialise the dog well with adults, children, dogs and other animals.

When you get the pup home, it'll be small so learn to 'shuffle' instead of walk around while the dog is running around on the floor, that way you're less likely to step on them...stepping on a large breed puppy is bad and could injure them but stepping on a small breed puppy can kill them easily.

Other than that, I'd just treat it like a large breed dog. PLEASE don't baby it!!! It's ok to be a typical loving dog parent, but a lot of small dogs turn into spoilt brats because the owners treat them differently to large breed dogs.

Cass.

oh cass your soooooooo right on about NOT BABYING!!! I see that being done so often with the tiny breeds and they become little "nippers", biters and scared of everything. When I got Delsi, she was only 8 ounces, but we treated her just like any dog. We did NOT carry her, she walked with harness and leash and yes, we learned to do the shuffle for quite sometime. She is the sweetest little Chi. and EVERYONE who meets her just falls in love.

My new baby is home!!!
When I went to pick her up, I was so excited!!!!
It was an hour and a half drive to Mississippi and so worth it!
I did not know what she would look like except for her being black and a goldish brown color.
When I saw her I could not believe how beautiful she was!
INSTANT LOVE!!!
She is a beautiful little girl, 12 weeks old.
I know she had a good breeder because she told me she would buy her back if I ever had to get rid of her.
But I told her that would never happen! :c)
She is the most well behaved puppy!
The whole ride back to Memphis, she did not whine or even use the potty on me! hehe
She is incredibly smart.
She is already using the potty outside and holding her bladder for when we take her out.
As soon as we got back to Memphis, we took her to the vet and he said that she was VERY healthy and we should not have any problems at all.
She weighs 3.7 lbs, and is the most precious baby I have ever seen!
I love that puppy so much!
Sorry for the long reply, I am just so happy I have her.
Oh and I think I am going to name her Baby, because that is what I always call her. :c)

Welllllllllll, congrats on your little "b-b" I just love the green-eye shine, shows how healthy they are, and love those little pink belly's. She's so cute. She looks more like a Yorkie than Poodle except for the ears. What a cutie. Keep those pictures coming in.

Baby is very cute, I love the markings around her eyes.
We have a 9mo old smaller dog compared to our big lab and I was so worried about her being little, but she fits right in and is a bit more of a no fear dog than our lab.
Matter of fact I don't think she knows she only weighs 12 lbs, instead 75 lbs!
To me sometimes having this small dog is like having a cat, she just comes and plops down on your lap whenever she fells like it. And she is very loving.
Just love Baby and take good care of her, and she will turn out to be your best friend and more.
Enjoy.

We had a Yorkipoo when I was growing up (I don't feel very manly saying that ) but seriously, she was the greatest dog ever. We got her when I was about 8 years old and she was around until I was 24

I have had 3 yorkipoos now and they all have been so sweet. She looks like Bentley, my first yorkiepoo when he was a pup. The first thing I thought when you said you were going to name her baby is, "No one puts baby in the corner" From Dirty Dancing.

update on baby :D

She is still the most well behaved pup! She truly does make me happy I have been feeding her Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice formula puppy food. She loves it! She also likes to play a game with me when she is eating it! She will put one piece of kibble in her mouth and then spit it out on the floor so that i can pretend to take it from her. After repeating this process about three times, she finally eats it. It is so adorable!
I don't want to get her addicted to treats due to them being so rich and her having a tiny sensitive tummy. I have found something she loves and is good for her. I bought her the all natural flavored Nyla bones. She absolutely loves them! Since she is still teething (not all of her teeth are in yet) she needs something to chew on besides my fingers!
Which leads to the next thing...
She has been biting pretty rough, but she is responding to the "no!"
When we yip after being nibbled at hard, she backs up and looks at us like "i'm sorry!" So cute! Also, when she bites too hard, I will gently grab her lower jaw and tell her no. She then nibbles softer. It will take a little while for her to understand that she cannot bite her mommy but I can already tell it is working. Hopefully I am doing it correctly?
Her potty training is going quite well. She will hold her bladder most of the time to be taken outside. Once we take her out, she knows to go potty. Everytime she does have an accident on the floor, I will show her and then take her outside. I also bought puppy pads for her at night while everyone is asleep and she cannot go potty. She is already using them
Over all, She is a great pup and i couldn't be happier with her!

Any advice on her food, discipline, or potty training?

Thanks

Jill
