Strange Mix... advice please

Ok, so my father in law FINALLY got a dog. Well, it's a 9 week old Dachsun(spelling, sorry!)/Pug mix . I haven't seen it yet, but I am wondering what the "benefits" or downfalls of this breed of dog(s). I don't know, so I figured I would ask you guys, since you are ALL helpful. Any little bits of informatioin would be helpful. I wasn't too keen on the idea of getting this mix, but I guess he's keeping the dog, so I might as well gain some information, right??

Also, once I get K9 to show me how to post pictures, I will get pictures posted on here of her so we can pick a name. Eddie, my father in law, hasn't picked one yet, so I am going to try to get some suggestions for him.

W/ out proper handling they are prone to serious back problems. They should not be doing a lot of stairs. When you pick them up you have to support the entire dog not just the front. (Again back problems)

I don't know what to tell you, but I still am laughing at that cross. I don't know maybe it is cute....but a pug/dachsund??? I can just imagine a long dog with a scrunched up face!!! LOL!

Here is some information on the health issues for both breeds taken from dogbreedinfo.com

Pugs catch colds easily and are stressed by hot and cold weather. They are prone to allergies and the short muzzle contributes to chronic breathing problems. (Pugs suffer from poor ventilation.) They are not the easiest whelpers. Expect Cesarean Section if breeding. There is a chance of keratites (inflammation of the cornea) and ulcers on the cornea. The delicate eyes are prone to weeping. This breed tends to wheeze and snore, but on the whole is a very easy-care dog. Do not overfeed a Pug, as they will eat more than is good for them, quickly becoming obese and living much shorter lives. Prone to skin problems.

Prone to spinal disc problems (Dachshund paralysis) and can develop heart disease, urinary tract problems, and diabetes. Dachshunds have a tendency to become overweight and lazy. This is a serious health risk, putting added strain on the back.

And of course, information from someone who has owned the breed is very valuable Barrett owns doxies and Pugdawg1 owns pugs... hopefully they will be around to help you with any information you need

Gosh!! That'll be hard with that family!! My "fiance's" parents are the kinds of parents that spoil the "kids". I will have to make sure that they know weight is an issue.

with mixes it's really hard to say what problems they will have or won't have. I have heard that pugs, along with other short snouted breeds like boxers, have breathing problems and overheat easily.
The dachshunds that I've know had to be on a strict feeding schedule, if allowed to free feed, they will gobble up everything in sight They are prone to back troubles. Most are fearless and will even chase horses.

Make sure they know the consequences of obesity, too. With Doxies prone to back problems already, being overweight is the WORST thing you can do to them.
