Does This Look Purebred or Close?

This is a shelter dog I may get tomorrow. The shelter claims that it is a 4 month Pom and is charging the max - $395. I was not allowed to touch him yet because he was just neutered. I put a hold on him and doing the meet/greet with Latte tomorrow. He is little and appears to be about 4 lbs.

I have a soft spot for black poms since I had one for 12 years and I believe he prolonged my father's life. However, does it look like purebred pom to you? (I'm looking for another toy so I'd hate for him to grow up to be a 30 lb Spitz! )

Does look pretty close. If that rule of doubling their weight at 4 months is correct, then he should be no bigger than 8-10 lbs.

Cute little guy! Hope everything goes well! Let us know how it goes

Is that shelter "SELLING" dogs or what!!! I've never in my life heard of such a price. It's non-profit for goodness sake.
Well he looks Pom to me. I helped a friend find a little black Pom she named Darcie. Good luck with your little boy.

I know. The price is outrageous.

V.I.P. Very Important Pets
Some of the animals in our adoption center are V.I.P.'s: these are dogs and cats that are in high demand for adoption and quickly find a loving home. V.I.P's have a higher adoption fee and they leave a financial legacy for the other animals in our care who may need extensive medical care or more time to find a loving home.
The Boulder Shelter for Animals is like the Boulder Homeless Shelter where I volunteer about 10 hours/month -- like a hotel. One of the residents at the latter once joked about not having a mint on his pillow. It is often said that if you have to be homeless, do it in Boulder. Dogs are adopted quickly.

My $15 one day hold will at least give me a chance to meet the dog.

I know my local boxer rescue is around the same price for their dogs... but maybe that's because it's a rescue and not a shelter. Ah well.. atleast you know they only get serious inquiries about dogs (hopefully).

He doesn't look purebred to me, the face just isn't right. But maybe poorly bred? Hopefully Icey is right, and regardless he'll just double his weight and be perfect size for you anyway. Good luck with the meeting between him and Latte. Let us know how it goes!

I tend to agree with you....I am certainly no expert on puppies or poms, but I board a few adult poms on a regular basis and their faces seem much more...um...petite or refined than this guys. Maybe its a puppy thing though...

Good luck with what you decide! Pure bred or not, he sure is a cutie!!

He is a handsome little guy! I wouldn't say purebred, but hopefully he won't get too large for you. Good luck!

I don't think he is purebreed... I had a pom, RIP Spike--- for 15 years.. Since he was a pup.. He looked nothing like that and he was black. However, he could have been shaved down too much, which is very likely with shelters, and poorly breed. I hope all works out with him. He is a cutie though

I'm still a one dog family.

1. It is definitely NOT a pom -- maybe a mix though. The long paws resemble those of a chin. It is already about 6 lbs.
2. The poor thing has a lot of special needs. It screamed whenever more than 3 people passed by. If I didn't have a puppy and didn't work 10 hours a day, I would have taken him right away. He was really sweet when 1 on 1 and It would have been a joy to help him socialize. I held him for about 15 minutes an he settled down.
3. The price was pretty hefty for this particular dog. The $395 didn't even include a microchip!
