niko has the runs

niko has been having a bad case of diareah for the past 3 days and i think it is because he is losing his baby teeth and keeps swallowing them

i have him on dry food now and it is helping but i want to know if this is the right thing to do ( he has a vet appointment but my vet is kindof wrong alot)

Swallowing his teeth is fine - Molly swallowed all of hers.

I think (anyone, correct me if I'm wrong) if you feed your dog pumpkin, it will make help make his poops more firm. Try it.

Did you switch him to dry food instantly or gradually?

First, if your vet is "wrong alot" then find another vet.....I guess I should ask what makes you say your vet is wrong? Have you had a bad experience with them in the past?

I must have missed that, but I agree with bigdoglover.

If you're not satisfied with your vet, find another.

Smile

I had alot of problems with Koko at about 5 to 6 months with diareha. At first she had a bacterial infection (she would eat anything). After a while and several trips to the vet we tried a kangaroo and oat diet and everything has be solid since. It seems that Koko had allergies to some proteins. It has worked so far and I am not about to change. It is alittle expensive but with 2 months of messy poops it is worth it. Hope you figure out what is wrong.

3 days of Big D warrants a trip to the vet. Could be anything from worms to giardia to a food allergy to, well, lots of things. I don't see how swallowing a tooth could cause Big D...but I've never dealt with puppies losing their teeth before.

You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice...a single protein source and a single carb source.

Glad to hear the runs are disappearing - I would still at least call your vet to see what he has to say, though.

I agree that talking to your vet would be the best thing. If his diareah continues, I'd get him to the vet ASAP.

My guess would be the food. If you made a direct switch, that would definetly cause stomach upset.

What brand are you feeding him?

Have you considered a higher quality dog food?

Pedigree is also a very poor quality food. Read this thread to learn what makes up a good quality dog food, and get some suggestions for a high quality brand:
http://www.globalpaw.com/dog-health-...food-fido.html

I just recently learned about dog nutrition and how to pick a good brand, so don't feel bad! Took me 7 years to get it right, and we're still finding a good quality brand that works for us.

For a good quality, fairly priced food, look into Nutro Source.
