Pomeranian help.

Hello. im hoping to get a pomeranian sometime in may of this year.
But, we have two bigger dogs. and i was just wondering if that would be a bad choice or not. in all the pomeranian books i got it said it wouldnt be. but i wanted some imput from not a book =)

It is not a problem if you plan to consistently supervise all interaction -- especially from the beginning. Pomeranians are small and can easily be harmed by a large dog who doesn't know his own strength.

If you are not right there to supervise them, you need to keep the pom isolated from the larger dogs. Eventually -- after the dog has been in your home for about 1 year -- you can not worry as much.

It only takes a moment for your pom to be permanently injured.

I moved my pom to my parents' home when I got my GSD puppy who innocently put my pom in danger. I was unable to supervise their interaction 100% of the time so they could not be together.

Do the two larger dogs that you have now get along with smaller dogs? I would test that out before I got a pom and if it doesn't work out with a pom perhaps look at a small medium breed about beagle sized. Dogs that size are more sturdy. My sister has a jack russel mix and he can play rough with her big lab without getting hurt.

I think that it really depends on the individual dogs and how they interact with smaller dogs. My Rough Collie, Sally, was always very good with smaller dogs, so when I got my Pomeranian, we never had any problems.

I would still definitely keep them supervised at first though, but that goes for any breed.

I crated my Pommy while I wasn't home at first just because I wasn't there to supervise, and although it isn't in my Collie's nature to hurt another dog, you just never know what can happen.

I agree...it depends entirely on your current dogs attitude towards small dogs (and other dogs in general). Only you know the answer.

Yes, It depend a great deal on what type of big dogs you have and whether they are trained or not. When I first brought home Carmella, my little pom, my dads GSD nearly killed her, and left her with permanate brain damage, after mistaking her for a play toy. 5 years later she was killed by my GSD after being once again mistaken for a play toy. It is very difficult to deal with that kind of loss. When something you love is killed by something else you love. I still blame myself for her death, She was my baby and I should have been their to protect her. On the other hand my lab/golden retriver mix, Chewbone, was one of Carmella's best play mates.

Well I have a pomeranian puppy and my parents have a belgian sheperd. Whenever I take my puppy to their house she wants to play with the big dog and run around with her. She is not afraid of her at all. The thing is now the sheperd wants nothing to do with her and will begin to snap at her and growl at her. As long as your big dogs can be nice to the little one it should be ok... just keep in mind they are very small dogs. Best of luck!
