Bobtail Chihuahua?

I am a member of another forum for Chihuahua owners. There is a lady who breeds AKC registered Chihuahuas, and has one up for sale. The thing is this puppy was born with a bobtail! That isnt normal, I'm sure. And, I've never heard of it happening before. I am assuming that there was a defect in the bloodlines somewhere?

The thing that really bothers me is that she is wanting $1200 for this puppy, and says that is AKC registered, and it could throw nice show quality puppies in the future. Why would anyone suggest breeding a Chihuahua with a bobtail, that could be passed to the puppies, and so on and so forth. Why suggest it, knowing that it will lower the quality of the breed? Here's a couple of pics...

Just because someone has registered dogs doesn't mean they're a reputable breeder. The AKC is just a registery, basically....it gives you paper work for your dogs. It doesn't evaluate the breeders or the individual dogs (unless they're entered into AKC conformation shows). Anyone can register their dogs with the AKC...it means exactly nothing.

You're right that no "reputable" breeder would sell that pup to someone to breed.

Why would anyone recommend buying it to breed? Because A: They're selfish, as is the buyer who goes on to breed the dog and B:They're only interested in the money and not in the dog itself or the breed in general.

Sadly there are more disreputable breeders out there than reputable ones which is one of the reasons I personally am so passionate about encouraging people NOT to breed without a darn good reason and NOT to buy from someone who isn't proven to be reputable.

Cass.

That lady is most definitely a back yard breeder..out for a quick buck.

On occasion, dogs will be born without tails, any animal can be born without a tail, of course there is no breed that is naturally born without tails, and it does show a defect in the bloodline of the breeding dogs..(I doubt that "Breeder" does any health checks, or even has certified dogs.)

That person really disgusts me!

I was considering buying from this "breeder" until she started getting pushy with me, repeatedly asking if I was taking one of her puppies. That really bothered me, so I looked into her breeding and dogs alittle more and I've come to the conclusion that she is a BYB. Once she found out that I decided to buy from a small breeder that's closer to home (who is also a member of that forum), she seemed to get upset at us both. The "breeder" also tried to "trade" puppies with the breeder I am buying from!!! I am sorry, but that sounds like she's just trying to get rid of the puppy. It really bothers me at how she doesnt seem to care about what happens to the puppies.

I do hope the little pup gets a very loving home that doesn't want to breed her.
Bostons are born with little cork-screw type tails and I'm sure there are more born without the longer tails, but I don't think it was ever a fault.

I too hope that she'll get a good pet home. All dogs deserve good homes with good families. I am sure she'd make a perfect pet. She seems to be a nice puppy, but the bobtail will maker her harder to home I'm sure.

Actually it probably won't. Someone will buy her and then claim to everyone they meet that she is a new type of Chi called a Bobtailed Chihuahua. Probably end up with people ringing the byb and asking for more of the same.

Cass.

Sadly, you are probably right with your statement

This lady doesn't sound like a very good breeder to me.

I agree that this is a byb, I can't believe she is going to charge so much for a short tailed chihuahua. I also can't believe that she is selling it to a person to breed.

This is not true at all boston terriers, australian shepherds and several other breeds are born naturally without tails. Maggie doesn't even have a corkscrew like tail she has a short round nub that is about 1/2 inch long.

Not all Aussies are born with stump tails. Me and my sis has Aussies from the same litter....my Buster was Blue Merle with a stump and her's was a tri-color with a full tail. It can occur, but not often.

I agree, that there could be a "Bobtail Chihuahua" epidemic come out of this. And, that is a horrible thought.

I must have missed this before, but DogLover is right...there are several breeds that naturally have bobtails. In fact the Old English Sheepdog is often called the "Bobtail" because of this, Pembroke Corgis and Swedish Valhunds are another two breeds that are naturally bobtailed.
Having said that...both bobtails and long tails are born in the same litter.

life lesson: if a breeder gets pushey with you they are most certainly not reputable

charging that much isn't a price that a akc breeder should be asking i know that most akc breeders don't charge over $400 unless something is really special about the dog

it is cute though

Actually Chihuahua's often cost quite a bit because C-Sections aren't uncommon in the breed and the litters are very small. But $1200 is a bit too much, especially for one with a fault like that (although it would be fine as a pet).

i know that chi's are generally more expensive and other toys also because of the c-section
