Question Cavalier King Charles

I have been wondering weather or not to get my mom a Cavalier. Her Tibitan spaniel, Lancie, which she loved very much, was sadley killed by a german shepherd not long ago. She is now suffering from empty nest syndrome b/c I will be going away to college next year and I'm the baby of the family. Now her baby Lancie is gone. I've been reserching different dog breeds and the Cavalier seems perfect, but I've also heard that they are prone to more medical conditions than most other breeds b/c their popularity back in the early 20th century lead to imbreeding. Does anyone here own a Cavalier or know someone who does. I would hate to see my mom having to nurse a sick dog and pay high vet bills.

Cavaliers make great family dogs, you need to make sure u get a good breeder, it all depends what breeder u get, look for breeders with clear heart and eye!! and ask lots of questions, the main question u should ask is why do u breed?
cavaliers are great little dogs, iam sure your mum would love one, and be careful she might fall into the cavalier trap, hehe

My bus. partner and I walk dogs. One of our favorite clients has a Calvalier puppy (now 5 months). He is ADORABLE! And smart as a whip. He is crate trained and has done very well with potty training. They are very sweet dogs and delightful to be around. It was a breed I considered - but at 4 dogs already I had to say enough already! Best of luck!

I have a Cavalier X and have spoken to lots of people with pure cavs and found he is very similiar in temprement and personality.

Basically they are really adaptable dogs - they can go from lounging around with you at home to running amok at the park - they adore being around their people.

As Mycavyangels said go to a breeder that does heart and eye testing and ask them lots of questions and expect as many questions to be asked of you and your mum - this way you'll know you are going to some one who really cares about the pups they are breeding and what sort of homes they are going to.

Cavs are great dogs. I agree with everyone else...the health depends on the breeder.

Best place to find a reputable breeder (one who breeds for health and temperament, and also shows their dogs), is through the national club in your area/country. I'm going to assume you're in the USA, forgive me if I'm mistaken though....this is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of America website. It has a list of breeders who are club members. Contact some of them and if you can't find one in your area, contact the club and they might be able to find you one (or ask some of the breeders to recommend people in or around your area).

Two big tips on finding a good breeder....Never buy from someone who just breeds 'pets' (they're not interested in the breed, only in 'breeding'...hope that make sense) and never buy from someone who just invites you over immediately to take your pick of the litter. A reputable breeder wants to match the right pup to the right person and they want to really get to know the person they're giving a pup to.

Cass.

I just wanted to add, make sure your mother KNOWS she is getting another dog, and have her look for one with you, because giving pets as gifts is not a good idea whatsoever!
