Pug People Where Are You?
In all the new folks that have registered with this forum... there's got to be some lurking Pug Person! Where are you? LOL I feel lonely, as far as I know I'm the only one with pugs that actively participates in the forums.

Hey PugDawg, I could ask my four year old sister if she wants to come on and chat with you! lol She LOVES Pugs. Somebody mom was talking to (I think at a store or whatever) was really amazed that Melanie even knew what a Pug was.
(Just make sure you don't make Mel mad when you are talking to her. If you do she'll chase ya down and hit you. (She gave JeanAnne (my 9yr old sis) a bloody nose one time *shakes head*.....) |

I had to tell you this story...
Last week I was at the Bowling alley with my fiance. He was bowling so I was doing work on the wedding and reading, but I noticed this pug on this guys shirt bowling next to my fiance. Well then I noticed the shirt said Bulldog Bar....but the dog was sure as day a PUG. Now I know to the non-dog lover and one who doesn’t know much about the breeds might see them as being a lot alike…. But they aren’t. My fiance and I love both Pugs and Bulldogs, so weve researched the breeds, we know what they look like and this dog on this guys shirt was NOT a PUG.. It really annoyed me, but I didnt want to confront him on it. |

Did you buy your pugs from a breeder or adopt them from a shelter?
I'm still trying to decide which way to go. I really want a puppy, but I also feel sort of guilty for buying a dog when there are already so many out there without homes. |

Winston was bought from a breeder. He's my 3 year old fawn.. healthy as can be. Oscar came to me in Las Vegas. He belonged to a family, where the husband was a truck driver that was gone all the time, the wife did NOT like the pug at ALL, and she had a baby, yadda yadda... so Oscar was kept outside in a dirt backyard 24/7. He was a filthy mess, fly bites all over his ears, nasty callous things on his elbows etc. He quickly adjusted to life as an indoor pug. He was around 3-4 years when I got him.. have had him 4 years, last December 18th. With Bentley, my black pug, I first saw him at an animal shelter last February. He had been found along a highway, WAY in the middle of nowhere. When I got to the shelter, I was 2nd on the list, and I could not get him. I was so incredibly bummed. But then in June, the local all breed dog rescue emailed me about a black pug that needed a home, and it was the SAME pug. That poor guy had 3 homes in 4 months, people that go. Bentley is far from that. He's a VERY active little guy, always wants to go go go. So he was passed from home to home. So I got him on June 7th. He's been WONDERFUL! We had to work through a bit of separation anxiety issues, and he still has a bit of a problem with that, but it's nothing for me. I couldn't ask for a better pug. Thats how I wound up with mine. Theres' pros and cons to getting a puppy, and getting an adult rescue. Puppies are a ton of work. Pug pups are active little guys.. play hard, sleep hard. They want to get into everything, as most puppies do. You must puppy-proof your home. You'll be back and forth a couple times for puppy shots. You should see about spaying/neutering at around six months. At least I do. Helps curb marking in the males, and you'll more than likely beat the first heat in a female. The great thing is you know the pug from the beginning... it is nice to raise a pup, mold it into what you want.. and know everything that's gone on in that pug's life. As for adopting an adult pug.. these days, that's my much preferred way to go. If you adopt a rescue, the pug probably will have been in a foster home. And the pug's foster mom/dad, will find out any behavioural quirks, health issues etc. They'll be able to tell you if the pug is good with kids, bad with kids, great with cats, bad with cats.. good with dogs, bad with dogs, etc. The pug will probably be housetrained, or at least, well on it's way. The pug will already be spayed/neutered and UTD on the needed vaccinations. Pug Rescue gets in pugs of ALL ages. I'm seeing an awful lot of youngsters winding up in rescue.. not just the oldtimers. Some people get a young pug pup, don't expect it to be such an energetic little fellow, decide they don't want to be bothered, and dump it off at the shelter, or a rescue, or like a pair of pugs I heard of recently, kicked out of a car and left in an open field. Pugs SHED. It's incredible what a pug can shed with those double coats that most pugs have, and so that is yet another reason.. people get the pug.. and then (GASP), they get hair on their furniture, and out goes the pug. Some are pugs who's owners have died, and the family doesn't want them, or there is no family to take them, so they wind up without a home. I guess I'm just trying to say that although not all pugs in rescue are old, or sick, or have some other problem, although YUP rescue gets plenty of those in too. It's all up to you really. If you go to a breeder, look long and hard for a reputable/ethical breeder. I can get together several good, informative pug links for you. |
