Is there a big difference between AKC and CKC?
The kind lady I bought my dog from said the only difference is the cost.
I am a little confussed about naming my new puppy also. From what I have read, it is appropriate to put the name of the breeder first, then the breeder will often give a specific letter to each litter. Maybe the first litter is all "A" names. This was not brought up to us by the breeder. Should I have initiated that conversation with her? I have not sent in his registration papers yet. I am thinking I should choose a different name. |

If you mean between AKC and CONTINENTAL KC, then yes, there is a big difference. The ContKC is a miller's/byb registry. They register mixed breeds as well as purebreds that don't have AKC papers.
Are your registration papers AKC or Continental? Normally in AKC and CanKC, the kennel name is part of the registered name. But if your breeder did not specify this, I would assume you can name the dog whatever you want, as long as there is not another dog registered with the same name. |

Thanks for the reply. The lady we bought our puppy from was not a puppy mill, if that's what you mean by the term "millers". She had two female and one male shih tzu adult dogs in her very clean country home. All of her adults had papers AKC registered. She gave us an AKC registation application.
It's just that she meantioned something about CKC registation while we were there? I was too focused on Willy to pay good enough attention. Yes, if she didn't seem to care about the name then you're right, we can register him under the name we want. I guess I was concerned I may have offended her by not using her last name first or even asking. Thanks again for the reply |

I would still ask her for good relations sake. But, it should have been spelled out in your contract with her.
And you seem a bit offended that she could have been a miller, well, AKC reg dogs in a clean home could very easily be a back yard breeder. In fact, 9 times out of 10 in my experience. Your contract should be very clear about many things, health guarantee included as well as smaller things like registration. If you live in the far northern parts of the US, she may have been speaking about the Canadian Kennel Club (the original CKC), as many dogs are double registered in the north. As a breeder I would want to know the name you chose before you sent it in. But that's my opinion. |

Hi
Thank you for the reply, do you know if there is a cut off date for when you can send it back? I do not plan on showing him, but he will be going to puppy class and I would like to do one of those good canine tests, would I need it for this? Thank you again for replying! |

Geeze - I haven't had a registered dog in years, so I am not sure about a cut-off date. I would send it in soon though.
I got a CGC for my rottie rescue girl, so no, you don't need her papers for that. You may find that the classes are addictive. ![]() |

To the original poster- if your breeder does not have a health guarantee with their dogs, then its pedigree, what kennel it should be registered under, and its name will hopefully be the least of your worries.
By health guarantee, I mean that your breeder ensures the health of the dog for the entirety of its life against any kind of genetic defects, and will take the dog back for any reason during the full course of its life if you are unable to care for it. You would find such information in the the contract your breeder should have made you sign before the purchase of your puppy Of course, the only way that the breeder could do that is to test for genetic issues. Shih Tzus have a myriad of health problems that you should make yourself familiar with so that you can recognize them when/if they happen. Your vet can answer any questions you have about this issue. I'm just letting you know what I would be concerned about in your place, especially since you bought from someone who is actually trying to charge you more for AKC papers. In your shoes, it would make me wonder what other corners they cut when breeding these dogs, which is why I brought up health earlier. To the poster who had a question about CGC (Canine Good Citizen), I don't believe that you have to have a pedigree to get a CGC. However, should you choose to participate in AKC sanctioned shows, you will either have to provide proof of pedigree, OR apply for an ILP number. You can find out more about that on the AKC's website. By shows, I mean if you want to participate in agility or rally-o with your dog. To your question about how long you can wait to register your dog, I can tell you that our breeder didn't give us Orchid's papers for almost a year from the point that we picked her up. We were able to register her just fine. One plus to registering your dog with the AKC is if you also microchip your dog. The more information that your microchip can provide about your dog, the more likely it will return to you if it is lost. |
