POMS & Bad Patella - Is This Common ?
Hi;
I'm new here, and I want to find either breeders of Poms or Pom Judges who can give me some information.My question is: Is it common in the Pom to have bad patella ( knee caps ). I had a Vet in Florida tell me today that every Pom she has examined has patella problems so she now thinks this is common in the breed. Can anyone give me their experiences ? ![]() |

yes, luxating patellas is very common in the breed. careful breeding and testing all breeding stock, as wlel as offspring, is necessary if you want to begin to breed it out of the breed.

Poms
Okay, but I bought a Pom that was suppose to be a breedable/show prospect puppy, and I was sent a male with only one testicle and grade 2 patella in both knees.
So she took a different pup into her vet to have check as a replacement and this pup has one patella with a grade one patella, but both testicles. I paid 2500 for the fiest one, now she wants me to pay an additional 1000 to get this pup, so I think I'm being swindled. |

you are.
first, any dog with only one descended testicle is not a show quality pup. it should be neutered to avoid testicular cancer, and the sooner the better. personally, i wouldnt get a pup with any patella problems, PERIOD. especially so young. take the pup you have, neuter him, and love him. |

Yeah...you're being swindled all right from an irreputable breeder/greeder. Extra money for a dog that is 1/2 normal? I would run and not get any dog from this person if it's not already too late. But if it is too late, I'd do what the others said, neuter and love it. You wanted a show dog? How did you get hooked up with this "breeder?" I'm so sorry.
I was suprised at those stats. Wow, Labs way up there...never heard of Labs having much problem with that. And Chihuahuas, (my other breed) I was suprised they were so far down on the list. I thought it was even more common. My one boy, a Chi mix has it....had surgery already for one leg. The other one is holding for the time being. It was miserable for him recovering from the surgery...something I dread to think of so many dogs out there suffering from. This is just one more thing that makes me detest back yard breeders....when I see such suffering, it makes my blood boil. That little boy quivered and cried in pain till the pee in him just fell out. My heart broke for him while he was in this pain. (and people worry about ear cropping! That's like getting your ears pierced compared to what little Jose went through) It does make one wonder about what is going on with the breeding practices....the show ring vs. the utility aspect of the breeds. My purebred Chi has pretty straight legs in back and I doubt she'll have a problem with it. It's the shape of Jose's legs that I can see why the knee falls out of the socket. They go out and then in....how weak that must be and what a strain on the joint! G-r-r-r-r.....back yard breeders suck! |

You are certainly being swindled! Run, don't walk, to return the puppy and get your money back. If a puppy that young has luxating patella (and you're not letting the puppy jump off of or over high places) it's a genetic weakness. Bad breeding.
