I have to advise against running this far with the dog. Most training runs for marathons are well over 10 miles, and can take several hours each. Can anyone hear honestly say they have seen a dog run without stopping for 2 hours straight?

I do long distances, but would never do over 10 miles with my bigger dog who is a much better distance dog then a Chi. (Part GSD, Dobe, Whippet, ???) With my yorkie I do not like taking her longer then a mile or two. I also do not think it would be good for such a young dog to be running those type of distances.

We are in the same boat as you as my fiancee wants to ride along side of me, and we plan to put our yorkie in a backpack for a good portion of the run. There will be a certain danger no matter what you do, and have almost severely hurt my dog while running with it. (she darted in front of me chasing something) I think you would be much better with the dog in some sort of back pack or basket then running along side you.

I guess you don't have a keeshond?! Yes Kuchi will not stop running, we'll I guess he would slow down maybe but he will continuously run for hours, this at a dog park or daycare.

But I do agree. I top Kuchi's training with me at 5 miles, about that's about an hour with me on a good day. Even though he isn't tired afterwards, I do a walk later in the day. A lot of marathon training have miles above 20 depending on what schedule you are doing.

I am pretty sure the only two breeds I would expect to be able to run with me on my longer 4+ hours straight nonstop paced runs would border collie, and GSD.

Hi All

Thank you SO much for all your replies, I love all the ideas. Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply.

He won't be walking or running the marathon! My partner is training, so is running for 20-30 mins 3 x a week, I can''t run to save my life so I ride alongside and wanted to take Peanut with me. Loving the idea of baskets and backpacks, going to look into those a bit more.

Peanut and I walk a mile every morning and he loves it! Looking forward to winter when I won't have to get up so early (I live in Nevada desert so go for a walk at 7 so the ground and weather is not too hot!)

Thanks again for all your replies!

How many people can say they've seen a person run without stopping 2 hours straight?

Anyways, I haven't seen a dog run 2 hours non stop, but I have seen dogs run 30 mins non stop, three times a week. Jenny runs 40 mins twice a day. Granted, she's bigger then a chihuahua. Like I said, most chis would be up to a 30 minute run. Maybe yours wouldn't. In that case, try a backback like others suggested, or a basket with restraints.

You got to get to a big marathon (I suggest Chicago, and heard the San Francisco one is amazing as well). They really are something to experience at least once in your life, and then you will be able to say you seen at least 40k people running for several hours straight.

If you really want insane though read about Ultra Marathoners. People that start running at 5 after work end Friday and do not stop (except to use the facilities, not even to sleep or eat, they do that on the run) until midday Sunday. I know of a few, and those people are truly nuts, although I do have the goal of 100 miler in the next couple years so I shouldn't talk.

Sorry for derailing the topic.

Hello!

Well I really want to get the backpack, but its $50 plus tax and shipping, something I cannot afford right now so then I thought I could get a normal backpack for now, but then I wasn't sure if I would be able to secure him in it and if he would be able to poke his head out etc.

Anyway I was browsing in Old Navy today and I found an over the shoulder satchel type back for $8 so I thought I would give it a go and it works wonders!

He fits perfectly in it, and its low enough for him to be able to see out well, and it has metal bars on it, so I put his harness and leash on and then tied it several times to the metal hooks (just like what it would be like in an actual dog bag)

He was able to lay comfy with his head outside, and then I had the back on my back. He loved it, he whines when he does't like something!

We went for a nice ride and I rode in front of my partner so he was able to check Peanut was ok at all times! It was so much fun to take him along and for him to enjoy it!

My camera is not working at the mo, but will take photos as soon as I can!

So here is a picture, its not the best! And he does have loads of room in there, its just a flap over the bag, he can put his head in and out as he pleases (no zips).
