Riding a bike with puppy? How?!

Hello all!

My partner is going to be doing a marathon in December and starts training this week. I can't run, so I am going to ride whilst he runs. Also a bike is my only form of transport at the moment and I would like to be able to take Peanut with me.

Now I wouldn't be able to ride and have him run alongside as I would be scared I would ride over his paws. So has anyone seen a backpack for dogs or anythign that he could ride in?

Peanut is a 5.5LB male chihuahua?

Oh and this will not substitute walking him, he will still have his daily walks!

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't have him run along side a bike for a marathon for more than just the risk of running over his paws. That's FAR to long and it would likely be too fast for him to keep up.

I also don't like the idea of him being in a backpack, I'd worry he could possible get out, or what if you fell for some reason? Not that you would, but there's always a chance, and he could get squished!

I think the best option is......getting one of those covered kiddie carts that you can pull behind a bike. Hard to explain what they look like, but I'm sure you've seen them around. I'll try and hunt down a picture of one.

I don't really think it would be a problem biking with him. After all, you'd only be biking at the speed your partner runs, which isn't very fast. I don't think it would be that difficult to keep an eye on the dog when you're doing such slow speeds. How far will you be going?

The simplest thing would be for your partner to run with him. Assuming the dog is in good enough shape to run with your partner. Then you wouldn't worry about running him over, or about dropping him while you bike.

I can only offer advice on the excersize part because I've never looked at backpacks for dogs.

Thank you for your replies! I guess I could see if he would be able to run with my partner, but he is not the best on the lead at the moment, he is only 5 months old, and my partner is afraid of stepping on him!

Shame they don't do a bike seat for him like they do with kids! I have seen those bike things for kids at the back that you drag along, maybe I will look into that too!

Thanks!

How about putting one of the dog baskets on the front of the bike? I have a wire basket (great ventilation) that both my Yorkies ride in.

What?! I think even walking (never mind jogging) a marathon type distance would be too much for a Chi.

Especially if he's only 5 mos!!! a walk around the block would probably tire his little body out! puppies young that should have shorter, but more frequent exercise than adult dogs. a marathon would be ridiculus for him to run

Actually you'd be surprised how much exercise Chi's love, but a marathon would be a bit much for a lot of dogs, never mind their size.

You can get backpacks that have space for a dog in it, google "DOG PERCH BACKPACK" to have a look at them. But a basket on the front would be great, as long as you had a little seatbelt for him to begin with (so he doesn't jump out).

Cass.

Something like this was what I was thinking.

Though Chi's do have a ton of energy, at least my neighbours 3 little ones do. That would be too much for Peanut to run. May something like these two pictures would be better for Peanut.

If you do opt for having a basket on the front of your bike I suggest that you don't go for just any old basket. I've seen some pretty bad situations with dogs and bike-baskets before. One guy who was riding a bike had a pug in a basket. When the guy stopped his bike the dog got thrown out of the basket and was hanging by its lead. It was awful to see!

What you should look for is something that your pup can't escape from, such as the cart BB posted a photo of. This would be your safest option if you will be riding on flat surfaces.

I would think a dog would feel safer if it was strapped to you like in a backpack or something. The trailer idea is ok, but maybe not convenient for everyone. Just my personal preference of course.

Mine are crazy about bike rides in the basket. I made them a 4 inch strap with a leash type clip at both ends. I hook one on their harness and one on the basket. They have never once tried to get out. I'll attach a couple of pictures. These of course had them tied in with the leashes before I made the short ones.

How far is this marathon? All the chi's I've known have been crazy hyper active dogs. There was young chi in agility class last fall and he was running a lot more then a jog would be.

Abby's the same! She can outrun me, my mum and Harley! She's a little speedy gonzales We take her for 2 hour walks sometimes and she's been great on them (if a little bit tired-out on the way back home).
