When will my chihuahua stop growing?

Hello!

Sorry I have asked so many questions lately! Just wondering when a puppy stops growing. I have read somewhere that they carry on growing till 8 months, 1 year, 2 years, double their weight from when they were 4 months old etc. Not sure which one to go by.

Peanut was 4 months old when I got him and weighed 5Ibs, and he is now almost 6 months old and weighs 6Ibs (according to house scales!) If he carries on this rate, he will be huge!

Thanks

I believe he should stop growing up when he's about one year - 18mths old and start growing out (filling out, getting to his adult weight) until he's about two. After two he's fully grown.

Cass.

My Chihuahua (who is an adult) weighs about 2.5-3 kilograms, which is around 5-6 pounds. I just checked on the American Kennel Club website for the Chihuahua's breed standard and this is what it said:

Quote:
A well balanced little dog not to exceed 6 pounds.
But, if you are walking Belle everyday she is probably gaining muscle mass, and that would contribute to her overall weight.

I hope its muscle weight I don't want him to be an unbalanced dog!

Do you both remember how big your chihuahuas were at 6 months and what they were when fully grown?

Thank you for replies!

Oh gosh, Abby was 6 months old 6 1/2 years ago! I think she weighed about 2 kilos if I remember correctly. She was a little chubby at one stage (when she was about 1), and then slimmed down and is now roughly 2.5 kilos. We get her weighed at the vet whenever we go, and they said she is a healthy weight for a Chihuahua.

How big your Chihuahua will be depends on who bred it (were the parents way out of standard?) and whether or not he's actually a pure Chihuahua (did you see the parents?).
It's possible he might not be 100% Chihuahua, but it's also possible that he is and that his parents were just both a lot bigger than the standard asks for.

No matter what size he is, he's gorgeous and a great companion.

Oh and personally I wouldn't walk a pup for a mile everyday. That seems a bit much exercise for a little guy with a growing skeleton. But that's just me. Since he's so small, others might disagree.

Cass.
