I am considering adopting a Maltese from a rescue center. They have two ( females) one is 2 and the the other is 4 and they want them adopted together as they think the 4 year old is the mother and the 2 year is from one of her litters or they may be sisters. Is it a good idea to have two (either siblings or parent/child) and if they have been raised together can they be separated without causing harm to either one? I am feeling I can manage both of them, but I wanted to get some thoughts from those of you who already have a maltese.
by the way they are purebred and they were given up by their owner because the owner became ill. thanks |

It really depends on the dogs' individual personalities as to whether they will cope well if separated. If they've spent the majority of their lives together they may find it difficult to cope living away from one another. I do think it's a good idea to have two dogs though, because they need other doggy company (and Maltese like attention), especially at times when you're not around, and I don't think it really makes a difference whether the two are siblings or parent/child.

I think it is great having two dogs. We had a pom here for a while with Rugby, and they occupied themselves very well. The only thing I would recommend is that if you do get two, make sure to spend time with each of them alone. I think it really helps them to get to know you and also not to be so dependent on having the other dog there. You can do this so many ways--taking one for a walk then the other....grooming...training...etc.
Good luck, maltese are great! If you get them (or one) you have to post pictures! ![]() |
