chihuahua walk time
Hi, thanks for the last replies, i feel better now knowing that it is just normal about the grass eating.
I was wonder, how often should i take my chihuahua to walk everyday. I usually take her 2 times a day, the first walk takes around 30 min while the second takes 10 min. (noon and afternoon for the weekend; afternoon and evening for week days) is this enough for my chihuahua, is she getting enough exercise she needs? I was also wondering if theres any recommanded food for chihuahuas, i feed my with palm one mixed with doggy can meat. is that healthy? thanks again. |

I don't think Chi's nee a whole lot of exercise. Two short walks a day should be fine. Teaching your pup to play fetch is another great way for exercise and playtime. I have dachshunds and I walk them for 30 minutes in the morning and they go for a 30 minute swim in the afternoon if the weather is nice. We go for really long hikes 3-4 days a week and I usually end up carrying my 8 month old pup on the way back. She gets tuckered out easily.

Your Chi is getting plenty of exercise. Honestly, a Chihuahua will get enough exercise if you simply played with it in the backyard for half an hour (lots of running of course). They need very little, which is why they're so popular with elderly people.
They do, however, LOVE a nice walk so what you're doing (2 walks a day) is wonderful for your dog. I can't recommend brands of dog food for you because I'm in Australia and our brands are different (well, for the most part) but I would recommend you get your dog use to eating dry food or at least chewing on lots of bones. Feeding canned meat all the time is bad for their teeth and Chihuahua's have problems in that area. My Chi, because of his past owners neglect (he's a rescue) has lost all but 4 of his teeth. So keep them brushed as well. Cass. |

Purina, unfortunately, isn't that great of a brand. Here are the ingredients in Purina ONE TOTAL NUTRITION Beef and Ride formula....(I will put a few of the bad ingredients in bold text, some of the OK ingredients in itallic text)
Beef, brewers rice, whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal (natural source of glucosamine), oat meal, animal fat (you want to know specifically what kind of fat it is) preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), whole grain wheat, fish meal, animal digest, chicken cartilage (natural source of glucosamine), defluorinated phosphate, malted barley flour, potassium chloride, salt, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, calcium carbonate, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite. Even if you only walked her around the block it would be enough. Chihuahua's don't really need to be walked, but it's good for them as a way to stimulate and socialize them or they become fearful and yappers if not taken out of the house. If your walking her on concrete, just keep your eyes on the pads of her feet that they aren't peeling.
As for the dog food........my personal opinion about Purina One is not a good one at all. I would not feed my dogs anything from a supermarket. Some great dog foods would be Innova, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and there are others people on this thread can also recommend, and none of it comes from a grocery store. Don't worry so much. You are a good mom or you wouldn't be asking questions. |

My Chihuahua gets walked twice a day for 10 mins each (and 30 mins or more on the weekend). This is more than enough for her. I actually read somewhere that the only exercise a Chi needed was for it to be walked around the loungeroom once a day!
I wouldn't go by that though. Like Barrett mentioned, a game of fetch is excellent too! I play this with Abby and she absolutely loves it and gets a lot of exercise from it.My dog is on Royal Canin (dry food) and All Natural (wet food).. not sure if you have these brands where you live. Royal Canine is much better than most of the dog foods out there, but it isn't the 'best' you can get. I'm not sure what the best would be, though. |

My chihuahua is 2 now and i don't walk her to much. I've learned that she rather run around on no leash then being walked. She gets alot of exercise from just running around in my house. I used to walk her but she didn't enjoy it and usually would make me carry her the way back. In my opinion if you have any where in a fenced area let your chihuahua run around on their own. They will get alot of exercise and probally enjoy more then being leashed up. Well its just my opinion on the way my dog is. Hpe it was somewhat helpful.

i once let my chihuahua run around in the back yard, but shes soo small that she went under the fence to the neigbour's yard and was about to fight their dogs. I take my chi to the park , let her run free when no one is around and keep her close so she wont fight with the ground hogs.

You are doing enough exercise when they get "dog tired." Chi's can gain weight easily, so I would watch the weight and see when your dog is tiring. We feed our Chi's Nutro Natural Choice, only sold in pet stores. They get the weight control one. When spayed/neutered I was told they lost 1/3 of their energy requirements and they chunked up easily. Chi's are all dog, and walks give them lots of stimulation.

Wow this is from a while ago. Ok, I tried to edit my post but I couldn't anymore. I made a typo (not realising it at the time). We actually walk Abby for 15 minutes twice a day (total of 30 minutes a day). And then on weekends she gets about two or (if she's lucky) three walks a day, which are about 20-30 minutes each (though the third one might only be like 10 minutes or so). If she is very lucky we go down to the big park and that is a 1 hour walk or more. She actually holds up really well and enjoys long walks, but sometimes she does start to drag behind on the leash a bit as we head for home.

My chi walks just as far as my aussie does. We walk them about a quarter mile up the road and back again at night. It is too hot to walk during the day time here in Texas..lol . He keeps up to her no problem. I also feed my dogs Blue Buffalo dog food. They both love it.
