Normal for dog to sleep all day?

Our 7 years old chihuahua sleeps all day under the bed, other than going out for a walk she just lays theres. She wont play with toys. However, we do give her treats and bones for her to chew.

Is this normal for chihuahua?

When you say she "just lays there". Do you mean she's completely inactive? Or does she wander around the house but always return to the same place and snooze on and off all day?

If she wanders around but goes back to snooze there on and off all day...I wouldn't worry about her. My Chihuahua doesn't play with toys or people either (although he loves to play with other dogs). She's a mature (not senior) dog so her 'puppy stage' is probably well and truely over.

She could also be exhausted from your walk.

However, if she lays in the same spot and does absolutely nothing at all, all day long despite your best efforts to interact with her. I'd say take her to the vet. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Cass.

She wont normally wonder around, and dont like to stay in the yard by her self. (barks alot when left alone)
She walks around occasionly for drinks and eat. Some times when some one comes home shes goes to the door to check whats going on, or when we are leaving the house. But when she stays at home, she normally just sleeps all day.

I think some dogs are just lazy. Mine is....he would rather sleep than do anything else. I've been sick for days and he is content just sleeping right along with me.

He will play...IF he's in the mood....but even THAT takes quite a bit of effort on my part.

Yes, dogs sleep a lot when they don't have anything else to do.

My parents dog has gotten used to being home alone during the day, and just sleeps the entire time. If something changes and someone is home he has little interest in doing anything, but sleeping. At 7 years old I am not surprised that she has mellowed out a bit. Some dogs grow out of toys and playing when they get older. It does not sound too bad, but maybe you can find some more activities that are appealing to her; swimming, hiking, car rides, anything that gets her up and moving.

Is this something new or has she always been lazy? If it is new, I'd take her in for a check-up. I noticed one of mine was lazier than normal and took her to the vet, they did some blood work. I had been giving her treats that were supposed to be all natural and would make it so her urine wouldn't burn the grass. They made her liver counts go up. I stopped giving them to her and had re-tested a month later and she was fine. My vet said tose treats were bad for dogs.
Another time she seemed even more lazy than usual , I took her to the vet and her anal glands needed expressing. Geez took me long enough to get to my point, if
you have noticed a change in her, it would be a good idea to have a vet check her out.

Dogs do tend to sleep all day if they don't have anything else they'd rather do
Is she/he overweight? Baxter got quite lazy when he put on a few extra pounds. Now that the weight is gone, he's back to his normal self.

My dog is 7 years old as well and is pretty quiet now. I figure if he is eating and drinking well, if he has normal bowel movements and seems content then I don't worry... he livens up enough to go for a walk or a car ride
Oddly enough those are the first questions my vet asks when I go see him, so that's about how I judge too.

Mandi sleeps all day while we are gone, but when we come home, she livens up and plays with her toys. We go for a walk (about a mile) and she sleeps some more, then gets up and plays fetch with me.....usually.

I also think that if he is bored, then you shouldn't worry. If he has changed from spunky to lazy, then I would worry, but other than that I think you are good.

hind and seek

my papillion is only young(2years) and he like his sleep just as much as any dog but he did get over weight when we didn't work him enough...he's a show jumper so he has to stay well toned... but i dont think it's good for you dog to be sleeping under the bed cos there mite be something she's afraid of....i no chuawahs (sry bout spelling) can be very nevous as i've been around a lot and there may be a new addition to the house ven if it's a new smell or just a peice of furnature and it's not good for her to get in to a habbit of hiding away from anything because although she's mature she can learn to stay hiddend and be shy of ppl and change...maybe put a blanket under the bed and see that she sleeps on it and when she's cumfy with it move it out to a small corner of a room where she can sleep around ppl...ie formal dineing where it's still quiet but ppl r there.

sry bout the lenght

My toy is only 9 months old and when I was sick recently, he slept all day with me. When I got up, he was ready to roll but when I was recuperating, he stayed by my side. This is why we love our dogs. They adapt to our needs.

Question Sad Yorkie

Along this same vein...
I have a three year old Yorkie, Smoky, who has started sleeping alot more. He seems otherwise healthy; his daily habits are fine, and he still is always ready for a walk or to play with his favorite ball, but the thing that has been worrying me and my husband is that he doesn't seem to want to be around us that much anymore. If we're just crashing on the couch and we bring him in with us, after about 5 minutes, he's headed back to the spot where he slept all day earlier while my husband and I were at work. We've been shutting all of the other doors in the house at night so that he'll stay in our bedroom at night, and not slink off to his "daytime" room. I'm afraid that he's bored or depressed, but we don't know what to do to help him. Any suggestions? Thanks!
