Brussels Griffon
I had seen/read these guys only in books for years up untill just recently when I got a new job. There are two of these little guys there. I got to tell you, they are the most eye-pleasing dogs you ever saw. They are the type you look at for a moment, and laugh at their funny moneky-like faces, kind not giving a second thought about them. But since I work with them everyday I started noticing both of them watching me more so then the other dogs that are their. I don't know if its because they don't get half the amount of attention as the other dogs get or because they are the type of dogs that like to stare, but they started getting to me. They are so odd looking that it makes them even more cute in a way the other dogs aren't. The one imperticular snuzzles me through the cage bars when I put my hand up to him. They both lick my face and hands when picked hem up. They are very clingy, which a like alot actually. They want to go everywhere with me so I tend to carry one around when I'm done with my daily chores or inbetween taking care of other dogs. The one will howl and paw at his door when I set him down to do a chore. When he finally calms down he'll settle for following me back and forth with his eyes as I walk by and if I look at him for more than 3 seconds he'll start pawing and howling for me to get him again. Although I've read some information on them I didn't remember what it said as I had read it over 4 years ago. I pulled out my book and looked him up. It said they are velcro dogs. They want to go everywhere with you. You'll never go to the bathroom alone again and when you do your dishes you'll have a little dogs laying on your feet.
I looked for information on them on the net and I couldn't find that much. But I didn't find that to be too suprizing considering they are more rare. So that's why I'm here. Tell me more about these guys. I would love to own one, but unfortunately I could never have either of the ones at my work for many reasons. I'd still love to have one or more in the future. Maybe 2 to 4 years down the road. Are there any owners out there? |

Here are a few interesting facts about them from the AKC:
The Brussels Griffon originated from breeding of the Affenpinscher to the Belgian street dog (Griffons d'Ecurie, or Stable Griffons). Smooth-coated Brussels Griffons are termed "Brabancons". The Brussels Griffon is not typical of the "pampered pet" stereotype of toy breeds. The Brussels Griffon was featured in 1997's hit, "As Good As It Gets", starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt. The Brussels Griffon is super-intelligent and sensitive. The Brussels Griffon can be self-conscious around strangers. If you haven't done so you can also find out lots of information on their breed history by going to the AKC site as well as the breed's National Club. ![]() American Brussels Griffon Association |

Yeah, The akc website was the first place I looked at for information. I read the breed standard. I looked at acople rescue websites hoping to find sound general information about the breed but most of what I found was more like general question a prospective dog owner should ask themselves them considering a dog. I wanted specifics. That's what I couldn't find. Then I tried a search under google or something and typed in ''brussels griffon dogs'' which gave me next to nothing.

Try typing in "Griffon Bruxellois" to get info on them. That's also their name.
And try looking for images of them. Sometimes you'll find good info by finding the pictures first. I found some sites for you (apologies if you've already seen them). Hope it helps. The Griffon Bruxellois club American Brussels Griffon Association Dog Breed Info Griffon Bruxellois page - Dog Breed Info is a good starting point when looking for info on breeds. You should book mark it (although it sadly has a lot of designer mutts listed on it , it's still a good site). Cass. |

They are adorable, I started reseaching them when I seen the movie...Wow about 2 weeks ago there was one at my vets when I brought my dog in for shots... I asked if he was a griffen and the guy was surprised that I knew he asked how many we had lol My hubby just said she knows alot about dogs and breeds lol Wouldn't mind having one sometime in my life... That was the first one I seen here, kicking myself for not asking if I could pet him
, he was soooooo cute I love that monkey face too |

They are adorable (a bit of a monkey face going on there).
I read that they're very rare due to difficult births (often involving C-sections), tiny litters and high puppy mortality rate. Unfortunately, with the movie As Good as It Gets, the increased interest in them has also increased unknowledgeable breeding. Since they're a member of the terrier family, they're a bit more aggressive and active than your average toy dog. They need a good bit of socialization to achieve a stable, confident temperment. |

Brussels Griffon
We have one.He's black,male.Weighs 6.4 lbs. and is 7 1/2mon. old.
Actually found him in our town by accident. We were looking for a shih tzu. But the breeder had a small male dog he wanted to show us. They we're going to show him ,but he has a undesended testicle.which is ok ,I don't want to be a breeder. When he came out,I knew what breed he was and knew the price was way to high. But they gave us such a great deal we had to get him. I am planning to start a griffy rescue soon. There is only one rescue in the U.S. right now. www.brusselsgriffonrescue.org |
