Maternal instincts of pugs
I was wondering if anyone else in here has bred pugs or is familiar with thier postnatal habits.
Yesterday my female Peanut had her single puppy didn't even take him out of the sack and went to bed. She was a few days early but She just dropped him and went on about her life. I noticed she was bleeding and rushed her to the all night vet ...which of course the bleeding had quit by the time they actually examined her. I called my husband and told him to search everywhere for puppies because I had asked the vet tech what her temp was and she said "fine"...fine &^%^ it was 100.3 a sign of them having babies. Sadly my husband found the pup a single fawn male quite large in fact but by then it was too late. The first litter of pugs I bred did the same exact thing. The mom dropped the pups all over my bedroom so fast I as getting them out of thesacks and breathing and she was having more....she wouldn't look or feed clean or care at all for any of them. I ended up staying up nights for 2 weeks to care for the babies.... This unconcern of the mothers...do they ever get over this? Thanks Amy |

I breed pugs
Hi Amy,
We started breeding pugs 4 years ago. We had heard all the terrible things that pug Moms do so we didn't let her have a chance in the beginning to "neglect" her babies. We counted her 60 days and made sure we were home. I of course did everything put push them out myself. Kricket seemed a little agitated with the pups, not quite sure what to do with them and wanted to nip them. We made sure that she was separated from them so she wouldn't hurt tham and actually had to pin her down to feed them. I am happy to say that she is much improved. She just had her 4th litter 2 days ago and she really is better. We have built a doggy door in our walk in closet door (that's where the pups are) and she has free access to them. She still won't feed them on her own, we actually have to sit with her and watch her but I think she just wants company, she does the feeding herself. With each litter she has gotten better, I'm not really sure when she decided she would like to be a good Mom but we're happy. Hopefully yours will improve because it sure is a lot of work to do on your own. |

Pug mama's
We have been breeders for 15 years, and we have had Pugs for 5 of them. As with any breed, sometimes the intinct simply does not kick in. Though with Pugs, due to their flat faces are not able to grasp the sack and tear it themselves. To be succesful at breeding this breed, you have to be present for the birth to assist with sack removal, flinging out fluid, etc. I always take a week + off at any time we may be havong a litter due (since we dont breed often, it isnt bad)
