My grandma's toy poodle, Roxie, gets sick almost everytime she rides in a car. She is now a little over a year old. Does anyone have any advice, she is so pitiful and we hate taking her anywhere cause we don't want her to feel so bad.

Ive heard that ginger cookies can help car sickness. Other than that, I would tell them to start her will small trips, just around the block, and gradually increase. The main thing is NOT to appear sympathetic to the dog's sickness, it will only exacerbate the problem. They should act very jolly about the car ride the whole time and ignore the barf. No clinging or coddling allowed. Clean it up without the dog seeing you and praise her at the end of the ride.

This may be an old wives tail but I do know that it works. Just give her a teaspoon of sugar a half hour before you put her in the car. It should stop nausea.

Is she stressed out during the car rides (panting a lot and uneasy, as well as the vomiting)? 'Rescue remedy' is suppose to work for pets as well as people (works for me, so I'm pretty sure it'll work for a little toy poodle LOL ). All it'll do is calm her nerves, then try what lapdog suggested.
You can find it at health food stores. It's herbal and perfectly safe. Cass. |

The reason ginger cookies are recommended for nausea is due to the presence of ginger. Ginger, lemon, and cayenne are popular natural nausea remedies. As a motion sickness "impaired" traveler, I've found regular, small doses of crystallized ginger to be beneficial to curing and easing nausea due to motion sickness.
Does Puppy regurgitate on the trips? It's generally a good idea to withdraw food a few hours before a car trip if your puppy is *truly* carsick. Another tip is to crate her during car trips and/or just block her view of the car window. Dogs usually don't look forward like humans, so they look sideways out at the whizzing scenery before them. Watching trees and buildings whiz past you is sure not going to help Puppy's nausea ![]() As well, is Puppy nervous BEFORE the trip? Puppy could be stressed out about going into the car because he's had bad experiences in it, like visiting the vet. They're just stressed about going for car rides and they can often depress their health so much that they seem like they're carsick. These problems can be cured by regularly taking the dog for fun trips to the park. However, if Puppy is truly carsick, you should the above suggestions. Good Luck! ![]() |

In addition to the scenery whizzing by (which gets to me - blah), it's thought that some dogs have a problem coping with the quickly alternating light and dark shapes and shadows. It can all be pretty confusing. Oncoming cars and trucks are also very weird. They seem to be coming right for you and then they blur and just...disappear. Grrrr. Scary.
Car sick dogs do better in a crate. |

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. She seems to be fairly calm when going for a ride, I think it is just the motion sickness; however we will try as many of the above suggestions are necessary!!
