Traveling with small dogs...(Papillons)

I have a 3 month old Papillon who I wil be taking to Florida from Virginia for Christmas. I just bought a carrying "Purse"...mesh/vinyl. She really makes is clear that she doesn't care for it. I'm driving this trip in December, but I was hoping to fly with her under my airplane seat in Feb. How do I slowly train her to stay in it for up to 4 hours? Also, she is puppy pad trained. Should I put a pad on the floor of the car, or just try to walk her when traveling by car? Do motels along I95 allow dogs, or do you try to "hide" them? She likes to ride in cars, but I don't want to keep her caged for the 15 hour trip!

You may want to invest in a doggy seat belt , one with a booster so the dog can see out the window. This way the dog is confined to that spot without being caged. As for the flight , train her now to get used to the carry bag. Each time you put her in treat her. Let her know that going in there means she gets something good. She has to be quiet during the flight so if you don't think she can ask your vet for a tranquelizer.

Is the puppy crate trained? I use an original Sherpa soft sided carrier (not a purse style tote) for airline travel. Cozy had no problem going in the carrier because it was similar to her hard sided plastic crate. Most purse carriers are higher than the airplane seat. The carrier that fits under the airline seat must also allow the dog to stand up and turn around. I would line the carrier with a puppy pad for a 4 hour airline trip. When we first started traveling with her, I always took Cozy into the bathroom or an out of the way place in the terminal to use the pad before the flight, but she never did.
You need to stop frequently when driving. Not only does the puppy need to relieve herself, cars are very stinky for dogs and she needs fresh air and a chance to stretch her legs.
All Red Roof Inns, La Quintas and Homestead Suites take dogs. Most Hampton Inns take dogs. With the other chains, some will take dogs some won't and it isn't consistent even in the same city. Not wise to sneak a puppy in to a hotel that does not allow them. Puppy will want to play and vocalize after a long hard day! There is no way you can explain to the puppy that she must not bark. Also, strange noises in the hotel - people on stairs, doors closing - may make her bark.
Puppy is safest in a crate or in a car harness when traveling by car.

I dont' think dogs have to be quiet when flying. Children don't! The dog has to be kept in the carrier, but the carrier doesn't have to stay under the seat the entire flight. You can put your hand it there to comfort her if needed. And put a toy and a chew in there...and carry some treats.

Usually the airplane staff are pretty nice, when my stepmom was bringing two lab puppies home from california for a friend, they let the dogs sit with her in the seat, they didn't have to stay in theier carrier at all!

Also make sure you have the shot record. You will go to a different window to pay for the dog's ticket and show shot record. You have to have her in an airline approved carrier, not the purse kind where she is in the open. You can just go to google and type in pet friendly hotel/motel in each of the states you may need to stay over. I flew with my Yorkie, Zada from TN. back to CA. and they didn't say a word that I kept my little scared sweetie in my lap the entire trip. I had a baby blanket that I just put her under and she was quite relaxed then.

I drove and flew with my Yorkie. He was excellent on the Plane, b/c he was scared to death and didn't move. it was funny.
As for driving. I preferred flying with Pepper, but when we did we would just stop and walk. He road in his carrier not a bag strapped in a seat belt. He fussed at first, but my kids fuss in their car seats. Their gonna fuss. You have to have tough love for the little guys. Oh and patience. I also let pepper come in the hotel with us. He was pretty unnoticeable and never barked so they never knew. But, I would tell the hotel anyway. Don't be bad like me and lie.
