My Samoyed
My baby is a purebreed Samoyed, however, he was from a petstore. While I do NOT regret this decision, I would NEVER recomend it to anyone. I feel as I saved Kino from a horrible life. He had already spent 4 months locked in a cage, it was time to be a part of a family. Even when I was buying Kino I knew it was a bad idea but I also knew in my heart Kino would end up just fine. As they say it is better to have loved and to have lost then to have never loved at all. I know I have made Kino's life the best possible. And I wouldnt change it for the world.
He is very healthy! One of his litter mates did die from a heart defect. We got lucky with Kino and he did NOT accuire that. He does have one multi colored eye (white/blue/brown) that the vets believe he will some day go blind it. However, for now he sees just fine. I will love him even more if he goes blind. His fur also did not come in right. Im not sure if its due to his bad breeding or the time of year he was born. He was suposed to be blowing his winter coat at the time as it was suposed to be growing in. He does not look as poufy as Samoyeds are suposed to, but thats ok. Hes still poufy enough. He is a very typical Sammy in every other way though!! Here is Kino at 4 months old: hes my little polar bear 6 months old Kino at 8 months 1 year old Kino today- In our new house. He is 15 months old now. He weighs 68 pounds ![]() Thats my Kino |

He is just gorgeous! I, once, walked into a pet store out of state that sold puppies (I didn't know that when I walked in). I felt so sorry for those babies that I wanted to buy every single one of them.... so I completely understand where you are soming from. The difference between you and other people is that you knew what you were getting into, knew the risks, and had educated yourself before hand. Thankfully, I don't think that there is one pet store in the entire state of Vermont that sells puppies! Kino is one lucky guy to have such a good home!

Lucky Dog!!
What a great story! I've btdt before, too...bought a puppy from a pet store because I felt sorry for it. I definitely don't regret the decision...we did save that puppy from a cruel life. I'd like to think that we give our dogs the best life possible...lots of love and attention. We also have a Samoyed, Avalanche, that we show. We bought him from what we thought was a reputable breeder, thinking we were doing this the correct way, but it turns out that this "breeder" is becoming more and more of a "puppy mill". How sad! We know refer to Avalanche as our "rescue dog", and he is SO sweet! We know he's not the best show dog, but he does have some really good points, and his movement is awesome. He's been described as "poetry in motion" when he moves. He is 20 months old, and other than the fact that we can't get weight put on him (he's 43 pounds and runs with 2 Corgis all the time), he's perfectly healthy. We've pulled him from the show ring to give him time to be a puppy and grow up and fill out. We've talked to a few professional handlers and our vet, and they've recommended a few high protein/high fat foods to put him on to get some weight on him, so we're keeping our fingers crossed. (there are pictures of all 3 of ours in the pictures section)
Enjoy your Sam! I love the fact that you can't help smiling when you see them, since they are always smiling at us. Bless you and everyone else that rescues a dog from a bad situation! We need more people in the world like that!!Shae |

He really is the best dog ive ever had. We did have a bit of trouble potty training him, being a pet store pup we assumed we would. Add that to the fact that when we got him we lived with two other not-so-well potty trained Min Pins it took him a bit. The day before we moved into our new house was the last time he EVER went to the bathroom in a house. |

Thanks...I wish it was that easy to just give him a little extra weight (I would give him 20lbs or so of mine, gladly!! LOL)
We try to groom him 2 or 3 times a week, normally, and on a show week, from 4-6 times a week, with a bath a couple of nights before the show. I use a good whitening shampoo, and that works wonders! Sams don't really shed, they tend to blow their coats. Avalanche is going through his major blowing right now (losing his adolescent coat and his winter undercoat), so we're getting 10-12 rakefulls of hair out when we comb him. He's not blowing too badly now, but he looks pretty naked! He looks more like a white wolf. Other than the grooming, a Samoyed is wonderful! I used to raise them about 15 years ago, and when my husband and I got married 3 years ago, he wanted a big dog after we got our Pembroke Corgi, and I knew that a Sam would get along with the little dog. (I used to have Sams and Shelties in my past life). Sams have a wonderful personality, tend to be a little stubborn (I know, what dog isn't?), and are great family dogs. Potty training has been a little difficult with him, too, especially since he's not neutered. Our little Cardigan is just going into her first season, so we're anticipating a little trouble with Avalanche in the next 2 weeks, so already have the crates set up on separate floors to keep them apart as best as possible. Fun, fun, fun!! LOL Shae |

Gorgeous Sams!
fireworks and husky, y'all have gorgeous Sams!! I just love the happy face and that smile! Mine (Avalanche)is one of our rescues (Duchess, our Pem, is the other), as shaerenae pointed out. He loves to cuddle, even on the hottest days, and is always flashing his pearly whites.
He always tells me about his day in those little woo-woos and barks, and he always acts like he hasn't seen me in a year, even if it's been 10 minutes! ![]() As for shedding/blowing, CleverCanine, just think about it snowing as the dog runs through your house, and you'll get the idea. We always get cramped hands from grooming when he sheds, but he always looks really white when you're done, as it seems like we just brush the dirt out, and not much else! Always remember, it's not where you got them, but how they live now. I'm sure if they could speak they would thank you a hundred times over ![]() husky lover, is that Sam wanna-be (Malamute) trying to steal the scene there or what? (gorgeous as well!!) |
