Stray Pit hanging around my house

Hi, there is a stray Pit that has been hanging around for a few days. It was sitting in the middle of the street, like it was waiting for someone. As I passed it I noticed it was extremely thin. I went back to my house and put some food off to the side of the road for him. He let me get about 10 feet from him and then he started to growl. I didn't want to get any closer than that anyway! He ate the food as I walked away. I called AC because I didn't know what else to do. Well, the dog is still around. He seems to disappear when they come by. He was going through my garbage today. I want to continue to feed him until someone can come get him, ( I really don't want him to go to the shelter) but I don't know who else to call. I guess my question is do you think I should continue to put food out for him? Not knowing his temperment makes me nervous, but I can't stand to see a starving animal. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Denise

Look for any pit rescues in your area or bullie rescues, they may take him in as well.

I would get a humane/live trap and set it out where you know he feels comfortable eating. This is generally how they catch loose spooky greyhounds. You do have to be sure it's large enough for him and, IIRC, that last grey they captured using a trap they ended up putting a towel down on the metal grating part at the bottom so she'd go all the way in.

If you set a trap, be sure you are there to monitor it at all times as you don't want to leave him in there for hours on end.

I know you don't want him to end up in a shelter where he may be put down...but maybe you'll find a rescue to take him. Either way, a humane end to life is much better than suffering in the elements, starving to death or being hit by a car

Good luck to you...and to the poor pup.

I didn't even think about a trap I'll contact some local rescues and see if I can borrow one. I've looked for a local pit rescue, but haven't found one yet. I'm off all weekend, so I hope I can get him soon.

Try looking on www.petfinder.com. Click on the Shelter and Rescue groups link up at the top and then search for your state. Even if there aren't any Pittie rescues, maybe another more general rescue will take him in. It's worth a shot.
